Radiator Upgrade
I recently discovered that you can replace a closed radiator system (87-91) with a 1992-2001 Cherokee radiator system (open system) while enduring minimal modification. I put a 1996 system on my 89 Cherokee pioneer. The radiator is the perfect size i only had to find a way to put the new vertical overflow box in the place of the former horizontal one. And there are also a few slits in which the clutch fan cover sits, that will not fit with the new radiator so instead of using the fan cover from the new radiator I just cut off the bottom of the old cover.
The only strange part is that there is a little orifice in which a valve with some wires attached just above the lower radiator hose, on the driver's side, on the closed system. i just disconnected the terminals and didn't bother putting it on the new one (since there wasn't a spot for it). Any idea what it is for? I was guessing it was a heat sensitive switch to activate the fan but I'm not sure...any ideas?
