Project - TANK XJ

Nice work. When I did my 2x6s I took a piece of 1/8" angle iron and welded it to the back side of the open rocker panel where the 2x6 pushes against to help with the weld and strengthen the tin can. I supported it to my mid stiffeners with 3 support beams.

Yes! I have a few updates on the build. I just went on a long (2 weeks) road trip / vacation, and also I was very busy at the shop lately and the jeep build was going really slow for the last month or so...
So, today I finally welded the passenger side 2x6 in place. I did what @unidentifiedbomb recommended and welded some 1/8 angle iron as a support, and that worked really well. I'm glad I did that!
Tried no to do a whole bunch of booger welds lol
Now I need to do the other side exactly the same and make some skids / boat sides. When I'm done with that, I can start on the hybrid cage.
Before I left on vacation, I got my front and rear trusses welded in place, and 14 bolt axle shaved. Now both housing as waiting on some new parts, and I can start making the suspension... finally.
The front truss is a TNT 78-79 dana 60 kit with a track bar bracket (truss selection for kingpin 60 is very limited). Rear 14 bolt truss is an Off-Road Anonymous DIY kit, that you weld and put together yourself. Pretty neat truss and the quality is good.
Also got my AWESOME Locked Off Road air bump stops for all four corners of the jeep. Go-fast suspension haha
They are super nice quality too.
I was sitting one day, and I decided that I would like to have a V8 in my jeep... So, that's pretty much what is going to happen. I sold my new titan engine and bought a super low mileage 5.3 Vortec engine, out of a Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Since I'm changing the motor, I needed a different transmission. Scored a freshly rebuilt th400 automatic. Then, when I thought it couldn't get any better, I scored a whole, brand new XJ LS conversion from Novak for half the price! Motor mounts, radiator, headers, and flex plate!
I'm planning to upgrade the motor a little bit with some new camshaft, lifters, pushrods, springs and all that good stuff. It's going to be pretty, and sound even better when I'm done!
*Some bonus photos of cool vehicles I saw during my road trip.

So finally, after the whole day of cutting, grinding, and grinding and cutting, I have one side (almost) done.
I'm actually really happy, because I had a moment when I thought it's gonna look like a complete turd and that I ruined the jeep lmao. Some stuff just went not as planned, but in the end, I'm very happy with the result and I think it's gonna look good when it's all done and painted.
One of the things that went not as planned was the main wall of the "boatside". I measured everything and drew it on the paper, and then when I put this in the computer to cut it on the CNC, It came out that I made a mistake and made the main wall 2" shorter...
So now it's shorter than it should have been, but I didn't want to waste a lot of material and this looks good too, so...
Of curse, the "caps" on the ends, took me the longest, but I finally got it all figured out and it looks SWEEEET! (or at least I think so lol)
*The welds might look ugly. That's because I have to weld over my head... The jeep is on the stands in the position where I can't sit under it, and I can't lay on the floor either, so it's kinda sketchy *

I finished welding the the ends of the boatsides on the passenger side, and today I started on the driver side. Of course, this side went much smoother and faster, because I'm doing this second time. Got 50% done. Tomorrow I just need to weld the boatside and the ends, and the rock sliders will be done!

So I finished the boatsides on the driver side the other day. I think they came out slightly better than the passenger side.
After a week of welding and grinding, I was tired and decided that today I'm gonna do some small work around the jeep, such as putting the locks in the doors, disassembling the 14 bolt hubs for powder coating, little stuff like that.
I also made a list of things that are still left to do on the jeep.
Some Raceline bling came in the mail as well.

Other than that, next week I'm going to buy some tubing and start on the cage

Just a little update.
I had to pause a little bit with the XJ because I and my brother are working on another jeep, that needs to be done really soon. Oh well, I guess my XJ is not important haha
Anyway, I'm changing the Dana 300 for an NP205 (ford)
I wast thinking about buying an atlas, but I just couldn't justify $3000 at the moment.
Especially when NP205 is pretty much indestructible, has bigger gears than atlas and when bolted behind an NWFB black box, it will have even more low range (5.3:1) than atlas 2 speed.
Also... three times cheaper than atlas as well.

Well, Dana 300 and np205 are both gear driven, both have cast housings, both really heavy duty.
Np205 is basically bombproof. Very big, very heavy. Gib gears, big output, and input shafts.
Dana 300 needs to be flipped (to work with the driver side drop axles). Np205 is a driver drop or passenger drop transfer case, depending on what truck it is out of. Ford is driver side, chevy and dodge is a passenger.
I have the ford version, so I don't have to flip it.
Both very good transfer cases though.
