project: "spend all my money"
1 Attachment(s)
Well i just picked up a 01 sport that came with a homebrewed lift that comes out to about 3in. but its just not enough for me. while searchin around craigslist i came across a rc 6.5" new in box for about half the price. i scooped that up and thats where im stuck now.
So i have plenty of questions that i would love to get some feedback on. Since i will be putting such a significant amount of lift on the jeep is a slip yoke elim. neccesary? Longer driveshafts? And what would be the best gearing ratio/axle swap i should consider for pushing 35s? plus many more questions. Any and all help is welcome! |

from what ive read a SYE will definately be needed with that much lift along with a custom rear driveshaft. good ratio for 35s would be around 4.56 according to this chart:
Attachment 357249 |
SYE yes, custom driveshaft no. if you can't get a stock front shaft to fit in the rear, look into the longer grand cherokee drive shaft. if those dont work take a drive shaft to a shop and have it re-tubed to a different length. custom drive shafts are over priced
4.56 or 4.88 for those 35's. what transmission do you have? that chart doesn't say what speed you have to go to reach those RPM's and it doesnt show if it's for auto trans or stick. 33" tire with 4.56 ratio and auto trans is not 3018rpm @ 65mph. it's more like 2250 |
just reg old aw-4 tranny. and is it worth it to regear the stock 8.25 and dana30 or to do complete swaps to bigger stronger axles?
|
anymore help anyone?
|
depends on what you are using the jeep for DD or rig or a mix of both, if you are just gonna be doing both regear and don't swap, if you get a 29 spline rebuild for the c8.25 and beef it up it's stronger than a stock d44, but at the same time mods for c8.25 are some what limited compared to D44
|
im running 33's with 4.56 and it perfect...if i was u id go with 4.88 with 35's
|
well right now i use it as a dd but i have a little good mpg car that i will go back to using as my dd mostly soon. but i still want to keep it pretty road capable for bad weather times.
|
|
then just upgrade internals and switch to 4.88 gears. that will make you off road capable with still giving you the ability to have a good on road ride

What all is needed for the full axle upgrade? Im pretty new to axles and gearing. Im not 100% sure but i think i have a front dana 30 low pinion reverse cut 27 spline and the rear chrysler 8.25 27 spline both 3:73 in it. I honestly have no idea what the difference in high and low pinion or what the spline count does. Im trying to get this lift done asap but i want to have my rears done first so i can assemble all at once. So any and all input will be helpful so i can get this done already!!

you really should go find 2 other stronger axles and start building those. such as a high pinion D30 and 29 spline 8.25/ xj D44/ or 8.8. gearing and locking axles can cost around $1200 with the cost of gear installation prices. it's a pretty big process for the average budget builder |
Im willing to do what i need to do for good axles. Im lookin to soend around a grand each. What makes the d30 high pinion better than low pinion?

so basically, HP has better clearance and for D30 I've read that HP is 30%(?) stronger? some number like that. look out for vacuum disconnect on the earlier models. here is a good site for stock xj info http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xjstockspecs.html
