As far as cost, i'm all about doing it right the first time, but also don't need the price to be a direct reflection of the "brand" name. So without much plan on doing serious rock crawling, I don't think i'll need to go that route, but yet want something sturdy enough to take more abuse than the stock stuff can handle.

A great direct bolt in replacement for your amount of lift is the Currie setup. Big, beefy, and you can swap it in no problem. Look at it here;

And if you're patient and browse off-road forums, you can find them in good shape used. This guy is selling one;

As an alternative, swapping out your XJ knuckles and going to WJ (grand cherokee) knuckles gives you OTK steering options and bigger better brakes. Not necessarily essential for your application, but a great DIY project with several improvements over stock. Here's a thread on it, scroll down the page a little and prepare your eyes to feast;

Awesome info, thanks dude!

Ok, no pics tonight, board meeting lasted too long, but tomorrow I'll try to get pics of the tires and rims mounted.

What back spacing are you soft 8 rims they look great .....will they rub lower control arms at full turn

mills350 02-23-2010 07:06 PM

The rims are 3.75" backspace, with 32x11.50R15's, and because of the bent drag link which the upgraded steering should be in this week, i'm not 100% sure they won't rub, but it really looks like they won't. I'll let you know when I get the new steering linkage in and really test things out.

they should not rub when you to turn. i have 4.00 back spacing they only rub a little when i turn hard. you shouldn't rub at all

cool man let us know

mills350 02-24-2010 07:31 PM

Drop pitman arm and steering stabilizer came in today, no good without the tie rod and drag link. Hopefully they'll come in tomorrow. Gotta work on the front brake line fitting where the metal line and rubber line connect. Somebody previously didn't use the proper flare nut wrench so i had to remove them with vise grips. Thanks previous owner. Time to make it better, and put on the braided stainless extended lines.

Better pic tomorrow, its late, and only had my phone with me in my shop. The steering linkage came in today, looks real heavy duty, fit perfectly. Yes its the rugged ridge set up. I've known several people locally with it and not one has had any kind of problem, so price, ease of installation and upgrade from stock, looks like a win. Its not a daily driver, so highway manners are not my biggest concern. Also did some brake line repair in the front, both sides the flare nut broke when I disconnected them, so after a faulty inverted flare tool..it broke...and 2 trips to the parts store, well 3 if you count the store that didn't have a replacement where i bought it from...now its fixed. Had to drill and tap new mounting bracket holes about an inch or so up from the stock location due to the shortened metal lines..tapped it for bigger bolts, and stainless bolts at that! Hopefully the rear will go a little smoother. Tomorrow the O2 sensor and egr valve should be delivered...the final peices left to put on so i can crank it up.

I know it's to late but your tie rod was installed backwards. the nut should be on the axle side

mills350 02-27-2010 07:52 PM

Not sure if i see what you are talking about...its a one ton upgrade, tie rod goes from one knuckle to the other. Don't know which tie rod you are talking about.
