Hello all,
I have been a Jeep guy for the last 10 years but due to reasons I have not owned an XJ for some time now. The last on I owned was an 88 with a junkyard 3" lift and 33x12.5 tires and was entirely a trail rig. The end of that one was when a tree fell in front of me on the highway. So now that I'm 10 years older and actually have a steady income I decided that it was time for a new XJ. This Jeep is going to be designed for light duty trail use and mainly my DD. With this in mind the qualities that I was looking for was comfort, reliability and looks. I narrowed my search down to the year range 97-2001 that was unmolested and straight with an original motor. I quickly realized how much these things seem to have grown in value over the last 10 years. After a few weeks of looking and driving all over the state I had found the one. Its a 2000 sport 4 x 4 with 201,000 miles, ran good and most everything worked on it. no lift or any other major modifications, the perfect starting point. Purchase price $2800 I am undecided in exactly what I am going to do to this Jeep, for sure I will be adding a small lift and some bigger tires. I am leaning on a rusty's 3 inch spring pack lift with 31x10.50 tires, stock rims gotta go also. Before I do the lift I will be cleaning this thing up nicely, taking the few dents out and doing as good of a paint correction job as I can. I then will start focusing on making it more comfortable, I am thinking remote start and automatic lighting. respectively. There are some issues that need to be addressed such as the drivers door module only works sometimes and the radio does the same. So I'm going to have to mess with that stuff. So far here is the list of stuff I have done. changed oil: Mobile 1 full synthetic 10-30 with appropriate filter changed trans fluid and filter: merc/dex III changed spark plugs: Champion copper core changed rear hatch struts installed replacement antenna (previous one was broken off) painted the front bumper: Krylon fusion black satin This wont be a super quick build, just a bit here and a bit there, now that I a am a member I will do some write ups about what I am doing. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...06d2ff431f.jpg washed first pic https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ae29c7a1ac.jpg after painting the front bumper, turned out pretty nice I will let you guys know if it lasts |

I figured I would share how I did it in case any of you wanted to do the same. I did not spend a lot of time on this as I plan on replacing the bumper with an off road style bumper. This fix took about 45 minutes and was very inexpensive. Like less than $20 if you went with standard sandpaper, I used sanding sponges because they are easier to use. first I had cleaned off all the dirt and stuff then took my before pic, as you can see the bumper had some serious problems but the plastic was just faded. Second was sanding, I did not sand the plastic and on the bumper started with 80 grit then went to 120 grit. I just smoothed out the paint chips. And called it good. I’m certain you could strip off all the paint and make it look a lot better but I didn’t go that far. third I wiped all the dust off and cleaned everything with alcohol, a bit of frog tape and painters paper later it was all prepped. Two coats of krylon and now we wait. |

Nice clean looking xj . The bumper's are a norm on them. Will be watching. I got mine thinking it would be a winter project but couldn't leave it alone and has grown rather Fast still have a list I want to do so not done yet! |
Real nice truck, that color and interior combo is sweet. Id check about using that trans fluid, from the little I have read it seems these transmissions are picky about what fluid is in them.

Disregard my previous idiot post, you are right. Seeing as how I am new to jeeps I always forget which one is good and which one is bad. The Dex/Merc is ok, its the ATF+4 that is no good.
