Project Free Jeep

My company built something that had to be shipped overseas, so last week I drove from Phoenix to Virginia to drop it off at the port in Norfolk. My dad lives in Virginia, so I called him and told him I'd swing through on my way back. When I told him I'd have an empty flatbed trailer, he asked if I was still interested in his Jeep. I said hell yes. The same day he went out and bought a Honda, and I inherited this Jeep. Strapped it down on the flatbed and a few days later I was back in Phoenix with my new Jeep.

My dad bought this Jeep new in '98 and has put 132k on it. It's bone stock and in excellent shape. Needs a little basic maintenance which I'm going to take care of this weekend.

And if anyone has seen that episode of South Park where they get everyone chanting 'FREE HAT FREE HAT'... well I've had that in my head but changed to FREE JEEP FREE JEEP for the last week.

My immediate plans for the Jeep are to have custom bumpers, sliders, and a roof rack built. A buddy of mine who does fabrication owes me some money so he's going to work off his debt by building some stuff.

I'm picking up some 33s in the next couple weeks hopefully. Looking for a good deal on a long arm lift kit.

Just working on cleaning it up for now. The drivers seat is broken so I pulled that out to repair. The bracket that holds the center console was broken too so I pulled that out also. Figured I'd steam clean the carpets while I had everything out. Pretty clean for 14 years of use.

Nice clean Jeep man. Free is always a good thing.

Picked up some wheels and tires yesterday. 33x12.5x15 TSL Thornbirds. Decided to just go with a 4" Rough Country lift... long arm kits are just too damn expensive. Maybe someday.

I'm hoping to have lift done by next weekend.

Lol.

That was my first thought... but then my free Jeep turns into not so free. I have a few other money pit cars already...so I'm going to be baller on a budget with this one.

Question.....why do our jeeps have that square patch missing in the carpet? first aid kit or something??

BEETROOT 09-13-2012 11:43 PM

I was wondering that also.

Your cherokee looks IDENTICAL to the one my dad bought new in '98. same color, same wheels, everything. looks like yours has command-trac if i am seeing the bezel correctly? my dads had up-country suspension and selec-trac. mom made him trade it in on a dodge minivan for her in 05 :brickwall:

Mine has selec-trac.

Picked up my 4.5 Rough Country lift last week. I met up with a few guys from a local Jeep forum and did the install.

We got the front end done in about 90 minutes, and were thinking the whole thing would be cake... the rear end was a ***** though. 3 out of 4 of the bolts that hold the rear shocks snapped, and the easy-out bit snapped off inside of the first one we tried to remove. We couldn't get above them without cutting out the floor, so we are going to make some custom shock mounts and weld them in next to or on top of the factory mounts. So for now the lift is in, just waiting until Monday to get some different rear shocks and mounting hardware.

The little square out of the carpet is because the silver box that's under the console used to be there. It's the airbag module, there was a recall that moved it there

Happened to me. Tac wweld a close hanger to bolts and feed it through. There's a little hole you can get through. Or some company sells different mounts.
