This is my first jeep I got a few weeks ago for $500 and it runs. This will be a LONG but good build so I wanted to start a thread so I could get some input on what I should do to it. First thing I am going to do is a motor swap. It has a 2.8 in it now..

My condolences on the 2.8.. I think a Supercharged 3.8 gm motor would be an awesome replacement. 260 hp and bulletproof a long as you dont get greedy with the boost! The same motor that came in Pontiac Grand prix GTP's, Buick regals, and i think some olds 98's.. It's a FWD motor, but i've seen them in RWD platforms before, such as an S-10.

I have a 4.3 gm motor that needs a little work that i was going to put in.. How hard would it be to swap in a 4.0- 4.3- or anything for that matter. I am going to put a 4.5 lift with 33" on it..

HAHA to swap a 4.0 liter in it you would be better off getting a differant xj than swapping from a 2.8 or even a 2.5 liter there is just to much work for the regular shadetree mech stick swapping the v-6 type motor in it and good luck keep us posted

It is not as easy as it sounds. I have done it and I can tell you everything needs to be changed. You need to upgrade the tranny first, the little trannys will not take the torque for very long. The radiator will cost you. Griffin makes one for this swap. You would be much better off with the GM 3.4L which is a bolt in and will make 160 hp in the good years.

Thanks for the info.. What transmission should I get with the 3.4l motor? I have 33's that I will put on after the swap..

You can use whatever you have now. It will bolt up to whatever bell housing, auto or standard you have. The only catch is that the 2.8 flex plate and flywheel has a weight welded on to balance it. That must be removed. Then you just bolt it up. I would suggest using a two row radiator instead of the single row.
