Wooo! Just voted for your rig. Currently put you in a tie with one of the others. Good luck!

Thanks man! Much appreciated. I want to win one of these months! But the guy I am tied with has a pretty nice rig. Should be a close match.

Weeks later another update. Just been driving the Jeep with no problems. I decided to make some long time needed updates. First up, shim the rear end to get the proper pinion angle. Second up, take a leaf out. It had a very rough ride and sat too high. Overall success. Might need to take another leaf out but going to put more miles on it before I come to a co conclusion. Going to take it on a 1000 mile trip this weekend.

I am very curios to see what you think of your ride quality now?

TFitzPat87 05-18-2017 10:00 AM

Gotta be careful though. Taking out too many leafs can lead to axle wrap.

Night and day difference. Wish I did it earlier. It now rides how I expected it to from the start.

I only took one leaf out so no worries. It was the 2nd one from the bottom. About the same size as most add-a-leafs.

For sure. I only mentioned it because you said you might take out another if that one didn't get you where you wanted.

That is a very valid point haha. Seeing how it is sitting after my drive to work, I think I am going to leave it with the one leaf out. It looks pretty good to me now. What do you think?

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...54e6b0875a.jpg

TFitzPat87 05-18-2017 01:40 PM

Looks good to me! Have a before picture for reference? Could always get and extra coil spring isolator to bump the front up just a tad. But I'm with ya! Looks pretty good!

When are you putting 33's under there?

5-Speed 05-18-2017 01:58 PM

33s will come during phase 2. Phase 2 will be long arm 4 link, 33s, e-lockers, frame stiffeners, 1 ton steering and some nice bumpers. Might bump it up to 4.5" at that point too.

This seems to be the best before picture I have at the moment.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...546a20ea1c.jpg

TFitzPat87 05-18-2017 02:06 PM

Ahhh, yeah! Definitely dropped it just enough.

5-Speed 05-18-2017 02:18 PM

Yep just enough! I have a feeling its going to settle another 1/4" and that would make a near perfect 1" drop from before. Right where I wanted to be. But in all honesty, I really didnt care if it came out level with the leaf removal. I really just wanted a better ride and thats exactly what I got.

5-Speed 05-19-2017 11:41 AM

It looks like today is the day I go on my first real long adventure in the Jeep. Last night I did the 4 hole injector swap and put some fresh Delo oil in it. Hoping to get some decent gas mileage! So the start of the trip is down here in southern CA, San Bernardino to be exact. From here, I am driving 400 miles north to San Jose to meet up with some friends (not Jeep people unfortunately). From there, we will head over to San Francisco. From San Fran we are going down to Monterey. I am really hoping to have enough time to stop by Laguna Seca! After we mess around in Monterey, heading down to Pismo Beach. We are going to spend the night on the beach (in a tent!) and hit up the dunes the next morning. After we are done playing in the dunes, its a 5 hour drive back home. We are taking the coastal route so there should be awesome views the entire time. I am not expecting any problems with the Jeep but we will see. I have done everything possible to make it a reliable vehicle and it has done just that for the past 2500 miles I have owned it. So whats another 1000 miles to add to it? Wish me and the Jeep luck! If you guys dont hear back from me by Tuesday, you know something went wrong.

TFitzPat87 05-19-2017 04:59 PM

Enjoy! Looking forward to seeing some pictures!

5-Speed 05-20-2017 02:06 AM

Well I made it. Just a tad under 400 miles so far. No issues and the Jeep cruised great. 18 mpg so far doing 75 mph. Display says 21. All up hill with a side wind. Going back home should be a lot better. We will see what the next tank brings.

5-Speed 05-20-2017 11:13 PM

Been driving around San Francisco all day. Not a good area to have a stick. Some hills are literally at a 45 degree angle. Pretty sure my clutch is mad at me. Currently eating some food in China town and then about to cross the golden gate bridge. Tomorrow I start heading back south.

And back to the hotel. Thanks to San Franciscos wonderful streets, I now have a random clunk going on in the front right. Sounds like a tie rod end. It still drives just fine but ill check in out in the morning. On to some more pictures. Entering the city on a pretty huge bridge.

Quite angry right now. 3 hour detour with no signs. See my spot on the map? Yep had to turn around and go all the way back to Monterey. Not cool at all.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3c9234ebbd.png

watermom 05-21-2017 10:17 PM

Sorry about your detour; those are some great photos of San Francisco! I've only been in California twice, each time en route to somewhere else. I'd love to just see it on it's own--

5-Speed 05-22-2017 01:40 AM

Well after the stupid detour, we made it to Pismo beach. A 3 hour drive turned in to 6.5. What really sucks is the drive along the coast is just amazing and I only got to see about 50 miles of it then had to turn around and see it again. Oh well. Im sitting on the beach right now having a beer with the love of my life so I cant complain. And tomorrow brings on the sand dunes!

Uhhh already 3 hours driving back today. Still another 2-2.5 hours left. Quick stop at carls jr for some food. Nice drive along the coast so far

5-Speed 05-23-2017 12:03 AM

Well I made it back. Overall the trip was a success with no real issues. The Jeep passed its first long term test. We didnt get to do everything we wanted to but still got a good chunk done. Ill give a more detailed update after I get some sleep.

5-Speed 05-23-2017 12:52 PM

Well getting sleep didnt help much. I am still pooped and did not want to go to work today. But I am here. Anyways, I am going to make a separate thread for the road trip and I will link it here after I make the post. Quick run down of the trip. Overall it was 1116 miles. After the first 2 tanks, I stopped logging my gas mileage. I did this because I could not get the tank to fill up all the way each time. Sometimes it would fill up to 1 bar below full and sometimes it would fill up past full. So calculating the mileage after each fill up was not accurate. That left me with using the display as a close guess. Even with all the traffic and the day of duning, it says I averaged 19 mpg overall. Average freeway speed was 75 mph. I would say that is not bad! The Jeep did not give me any issues the whole time. Pretty sure I have a tie rod going out though. After the horrible streets of San Francisco, it starting making a single pop noise when doing a sharp turn and hitting a bump. It wanders a little bit more then normal as well. So I think I am going to park it until I can give it a good look over and replace whatever is needed. I am pretty sure I am just going to do a whole front end and steering rebuild. Those are the few parts I have not replaced yet so I might as well. But it was an overall success! Next trip might just be Moab....

5-Speed 05-23-2017 07:25 PM

Alright, here is the link to the full road trip.

CLICK ME!!!!

JandDGreens 05-23-2017 07:29 PM

Mine did that and I found my track-bar bolt was loose. I was wondering all over the place. Another time my track-bar mount to the frame came loose it started wandering again once I tightened-er up I painted some pin strips so I could see if it had moved on me at glance.

5-Speed 05-23-2017 07:39 PM

I went over the entire front end while at Pismo. Track bar was tight at both ends and on the mount. Its only got about 3500 miles on it as well. And its not a stocker. I have a torn boot on one of the steerings tie rod ends and normally if the boot cracks, the tie rod is bad. I have no idea how many miles are on the steering stuff since it was from a donor v8 ZJ. It could be the steering box itself too. If someone shakes the steering wheel, you can watch the pitman arm move from side to side about 1/4" total.

JandDGreens 05-24-2017 09:45 PM

when mine started wandering I nearly replaced everything, Durango steering box, High performance power steering pump, control arm bushings (Were as shot as stock motor mounts get), and Curry-link system. and found out the track bar was 90% of the problem.

5-Speed 05-25-2017 12:06 AM

I really dont think its the track bar. It is too new and has no slop (its a RE track bar with a drop mount). To top that off, the bolts are not loose. I checked them 2 days ago. The mount on the axle has a hole so tight, you have to thread the bolt in to it (and its a 1/2" bolt). It is not ovaled at all. All the tie rods have who knows how many miles on them and some have cracked boots. So I figure they need to be replaced any way. Might as well go the extra step and do the ball joints while I am down there.

So what you're trying to say is Cavfab (or similar) steering on the way!!!!

Haha no not yet. Sticking with my ZJ stuff until the tires get bigger or the arms get longer. Hoping they both find a way to do it on there own.

Hahaha, yeah. I always hope I'll wake up and something on my Jeep will magically be "done".

5-Speed 05-25-2017 03:30 PM

Ya maybe one day it will happen. Need to find this magical Viagra for Jeeps.

5-Speed 06-13-2017 03:06 PM

Not much to report on the Jeep lately. Havent been driving it that much. I will get around to refreshing the steering one of these days. Still drives fine. But I did take the Jeep out over the weekend. Nothing too crazy. Braytonia has been wanting to go to Cleghorn so we made a quick trip out there and did the first 3 hard sections. They werent hard at all. Just very rutted out. Its at the end of the trail when things get bad. But we are saving that for another day when we can get more Jeeps out there.

Like normal, not much to report on the Jeep. It has been great. Going to replace all the steering and brakes soon. Mights as well since I have no idea how long its been on. Then the steering box. Its got some play. Other then that, its been pretty good. And to top that off, this is post # 1000 for me!

5-Speed 09-03-2017 12:52 AM

Well here is my minor update. New steering box has been ordered and should be here mid next week. I also ordered a new steering box spacer plate thingy and it is already here. Its from C-rok and looks like a machine welded it!

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...9f0bb67c6c.jpg

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...eb688481aa.jpg

Next up was the front brakes. Old ones still had half a pad left but the steering wheel wobbled when on the brakes hard. New pads and rotors should fix it.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a93a08ff84.jpg

When I popped everything off, I saw I had a minor issue. Looks like I have some welding and grinding ahead of me.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...32afa655f2.jpg

After that, I moved on to the rear drums. Popped the old ones off and had a look. New shoes didnt look the same. Sure enough, they are completely different. To make things worse, all the springs and such I ordered dont look right either. A big fail tonight for the rear brake change.
