Mysterious shock...

So I just bought my 97 XJ and so far I am really enjoying it. But now as I want to go through it and replace bolts and bushings, shocks and other bits, something isn't adding up. I'm new to offloading so hopefully I don't sound too dumb with this description...there is a shock running from behind the pitman bar down to the wheel bearing area. If one of you pros can help me out with wtf this is and whats for I would appreciate it.

Update: initially I thought this to be a steering stabilizer, what makes me think it's not is that there us only the one on the right side and there does seem to be a proper connection on the left that would suggest so.

looks like a steering stabilizer to me. in the factory location. there only needs to be the one it moves in and out for turning both left and right. its connected to the drag link that connects the box to the right knuckle and then the left knuckle is connected to the drag link by the tie rod. it all works as one system tho there is lots of parts

Agree. Looks like the steering stabilizer.

Ok thanks. It is different than other systems I have seen, as well as various front end diagrams I have looked through. But, like I said, I'm a newbie. I WILL however gladly say that my cherry has been popped by a near rollover and without ground guidance, pulled out. Haha, I reached out the window and grabbed some dirt, and was like, "here goes nothing" haha. Thanks for the help and clarification.
