My 1990 'Backyard Budget Build'

Well, I havent been on here in forever. Anyways i finally sold my 1992 camaro Rs for a bone stock 1990 jeep cherokee laredo. It is 2wd. and had some cosmetic problems... i dont have any older pictures, but i have a few of how it is today, and what all i have done, along with what i plan on doing soon.

This is pretty much what my jeep looked like the day i got it...

From there i put on a roof rack, a 3.5 inch suspension lift, and 30 inch goodyear wrangler A/T tires.

I took the jeep and played around a little bit on some local dirtroads. from then on, i can honestly say, IM HOOKED :D

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...ing-around.jpg

I soon took it on a mudding trip with one of my buddies. i managed not to get stuck. i was excited.

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...-inch-lift.jpg

my buddy on the other hand, wasnt so lucky....

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...-inch-lift.jpg

so we had to call in the backup crew, as you can see, the road itself proves to be a challenge

My jeep just sitting and watching...

needless to say, we got him out, and went home for the day.

I soon found that my side trim was very faded, and the pinstripe above it was almost unnoticeable...so i pulled out the ole rattle can spray paint, and went to work

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...t-jeep-pic.jpg

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...ep-picture.jpg

and here was the final result... 2 cans of black paint, some painters tape, and a little bit of decorative mud ;)

The jeep came with a radio, but the display did not work, so i ended up pulling it out, and trashing it.

and this is what im left with...

I soon got the urge to just hook up a few subwoofers i had laying around. so i did! :)

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...ch-pioneer.jpg

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...0-watt-amp.jpg

I ended up with a 10" MTX SUB, a 12" PIONEER SUB, a 1000 watt sony amp, and a 2000 watt crunch amp. Still, no radio :/ lol

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...back-hatch.jpg

i also wired up some aftermarket 6x9 inch speakers in the back hatch...

Then, out of nowhere, my jeep started overheating most everytime i would drive it, so i went to a JY and picked up an electric radiator fan, and mounted it. So now i have 2 fans. But i couldnt figure out how to wire it, so i just put a switch in the cab...

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...diator-fan.jpg

I mounted the switch to the left of the base of the steering column.

My jeep also did not have any cupholders....

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...-cupholder.jpg

Problem solved :)

Then i ended up missing the loud exhaust from my old camaro :(
Sooo....

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...w-turndown.jpg

....I straight piped the jeep, and added a cherry bomb exhaust with a turndown :)

The outside of my jeep seems to catch much attention...

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...loorboards.jpg

...so why shouldnt the inside? ;)

Then i painted my tie rod a bright yellow, and also beat the old fog lights off, and replaced with some new ones....I was very surprised to see that the new fog lights are actually brighter than my headlights :glare:

.... and also, just for some information, I am only 16 years old :)

well that is all i have for now, more to come soon! :)

Looking good man! Any plans on doing a 4wd swap to it?

Peakeboy 12-21-2011 09:04 AM

nahhh. i dont think im going to try to tackle that...the jeep had a small knock in the motor when i got it, and it has 214,000 miles. So im going to wheel it until it gives out, then hopefully buy a 2001 jeep cherokee 4x4. Im fine with it being two wheel drive, only because i will probably purchase a winch here soon...maybe with some christmas money? :glare:

raunchymailman 12-21-2011 02:44 PM

Great start. So are you gonna do a prerunner build? that would be sick

Peakeboy 12-21-2011 08:47 PM

haha. sorry for my lack of intelligence...but what is a "prerunner build" ?

raunchymailman 12-22-2011 08:27 AM

haha its ok i didnt no what it was until i got on here to. Its just a lifted 2wd that goes fast as hell and is fun to drive. I been tryin to fin d a 2dr 2wd to build.

Peakeboy 12-22-2011 10:00 AM

ohhh. haha. Nahhh. im just building it like i would a 4wd. i have been in the same mud holes as my 4wd buddies, and not had many problems at all actually! surprising? but i hope to put another 2 inches of lift and some 33'' tires.

Nice job on the Cherokee, it look pretty good.

raunchymailman 12-22-2011 02:33 PM

well it looks great. i cant wait to see where this goes.

raunchymailman 12-22-2011 02:40 PM

also how do the speakers in the back hatch sound? i really like that idea

Peakeboy 12-22-2011 11:13 PM

They sound really good actually! i was quite surprised. And i also went and did a little "night wheeling" and "mall crawling" (at a local walmart supercenter) tonight ...so ill post pics up ASAP!

raunchymailman 12-23-2011 06:40 AM

Any good spots up there to wheel? we got a few down where im at but nothing to die for.

Peakeboy 12-23-2011 05:37 PM

No...not really. theres a lot of backwoods dirt roads. TONS of mud though. But as of tonight, im not going on a dirt road for awhile... Some "anti-offroader" put nails in all the mudholes on one of my favorite roads, and when i went mudding and got back to my house to wash off, i looked at all my tires, and EVERY ONE had at least 3 nails in it. Im beyond mad. And that all happened tonight! pics to come soon

Peakeboy 12-23-2011 10:50 PM

okay, i finally brought my camera inside and got the pictures of last night off...

heres a few from the dirt roads we ''explored" before it got dark ;)
http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0753.jpghttp://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0755.jpghttp://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0754.jpg

after it got dark, we found this one dirt road with really steep banks. The pictures dont do much justice. http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0759.jpg
http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0758.jpg
http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0757.jpg

Then we went and rode around in some shallow streams off the side of a dirt road...it was actually very fun lol. it was only about 4 inches deep, 8 inches at the deepest.
http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0760.jpg
http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0761.jpg

Then i needed to go to walmart for some stuff, and of course, some "mall crawling" poser shots :)))

http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0766.jpg
http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...y/100_0763.jpg

And to go along with the "build" part of the thread, you can see my new xenon fog lights i put on beside the other fog lights :D theyre awsome, and i have them pointed out at a 45 degree angle, so it illuminates ditches and such!

well, thats all ive got for now. Thanks for looking! ill keep everyone posted! :)

Peakeboy 12-23-2011 10:52 PM

I also painted my front grille black too! i like the way it looks!
