Looking into purchasing
 

Hey guys! I'm obviously new to all this so bare with me. I'm looking into buying a 1990 jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0 inline 6 4x4 with 167K on it. Test drove it already and it runs great and 4wd works perfectly! Had my mechanic check it out today and everything was pretty much fine for the most part. We found that the steering box and main seal are leaking but very little and my mechanic said its a common thing in jeeps, and to not worry about it just check the fluids often. It needs new sway bar bearings, new ignition cylinder($16 at autozone) and new brakes. All pretty inexpensive parts that I can do myself. The guy is asking 2900 for it and I just want to make sure it's a good deal before I go for it! What do you think? It's got a 4 inch lift on the front and a 2 on the back, new tires (not all terrains but they'll do) interior is almost perfect, etc. it's in pretty great shape! He is also throwing in another motor (same one, only missing 1 small part) and a front axel because he doesn't need them if he's getting rid of the jeep! I used to own a 1999 Chevy tracker 4x4 (my first car, got it for free) and I was forced to sell it. I've missed it ever since and figured a jeep would be the best way to get back in to the off road world!

Some of the things he's done:
New upper and lower ball joints on both sides. New water pump, thermostat, power steering pump, exhaust manifold gasket, 02 sensor, catalytic converter, and a new muffler.

Welcome 4x4Princess! It's too old and too much money. Get some Jeep history info so you know what year has what benefits. For instance, you can get a 1996 Cherokee w/ less miles for abt the same money, but w/ many more improvements like a computer jack-in for diagnostics or real-time mpg or advanced gps trip functions. Can't do w/ 1990. Take your time, there's lots of Cherokees for sale in California. Look for newer, cheaper, 4 door, 4.0 ho, never driven off-road (lifted=hard use=less value), west coast only (no rust), etc, etc. Spend maybe $2000. Best of luck! :wheelchair:

PS All the new stuff is because all the OLD stuff BUSTED. New stuff means stuff is failing! Remember: Newer, cheaper. :kick:

Welcome Princess! Like stated above, take your time, you can find another cherokee with less miles and newer. The word around the campfire is that a '99 is preferred. Good luck and have fun!

I wouldn't necessarily narrow that one out.

It seems a bit high, but if its been well maintained it seems like an ok price.

For what it's worth I paid 1500 for a super clean 98 with just about the same mileage.

Just because it doesn't have obd or obd2 like these guys are saying doesnt mean anything..

Sure the newer xjs have some nicer features but the older ones are a classic.

I'd try talking dude down a bit..find out more about the lift (is it half assed).

Seems a bit high on price but jeeps seem more expensive by you. I bought my 1990 XJ Laredo with 116k for $2500 in NY. It was stock, clean, and not much rust. Lifting doesn't add value. I don't care for the newer style XJs (97-01) personally. Or any of the OBD stuff the HOs had (91-01). I got a 88 MJ and 90 XJ which is my preferred range. Look around a bit to find out what you want.

He keeps dropping the price slowly so maybe we can get a good deal. If not, well then ill keep huntin! Ill let you guys know what happens!

Hey guys. thank you again for everything! i think i forgot to mention the guy is also throwing in a complete separate motor and front axle. so our price without those extras is 2500 and with them is 2800. I'm going to buy the jeep but you guys think its worth it to also grab the motor and axle? both look very clean and the motor is supposed to have low miles and run great.

It's worth it if you think you'll make use of the extras. If not then just take the discounted price. Do you know what kind of axle the extra one is?
