I really like the OM606 and I really want a OM642 I really want to see this run.
Can you maintain an automatic trans have OBD11, and work with the 242 transfercase?
Mostly the automatic and OBD11, not pickin on older diesel but I would rather have newer diesel. The OM606 1997-2001 looks really promising numers stock if I could get it for a reasonable price and, haveing adequate numbers and mods could always be done in the future. Definitely watching this thread

The 98-99 606 engine is great engine and can be used with the earlier mechanical IP pump to get away from the electronics. This is a problem with the later diesel engines like the Sprinter. Getting around the electronics is a problem but can be done. I personally like the 606 engine it is a lot better engine then the Sprinter is. Unfortionately there are no adapters available for the 606 engine and they have to be custom made.

OK then it comes down to personal preference of basically turning up the pump on a 12v or tuning a 24v. Personaly I would rather have 606.964 with a electric pump great for stock but not aftermarket, considering in America there wouldn't be alot of support on the electric with tuning. I would stick with what you said and get the 98-99 that way aftermarket is an option in the future. So many pros and cons, I will just watch the outcome don't mind me.

I just stumbled upon this thread. I was wandering what you have for adapters going on and where you sourced them. My dead reliable 1990 300d has some major rot issues and is not long for this world but the engine runs great (OM602)
I am interested in possibly dropping it into an older cherokee stick like you have. It looks like Novak jeep trans to SB chevy but what are you using for MB to SB chevy bell housing also flywheel clutch all that good stuff.

What is the difference between the 617 and the 606 with regards to end-game performance?

If money is not your first concern, which would you recommend for a moderate build intended for both a DD as well as a bug-out rig?

Thanks,
-Mike

om 617 is an awsome primative beast. It is the most direct fit and offers 100-125 hp stock. om 606 is a high revving 24v 6 cyl that produces 175hp stock. In order to run the om 606 with out the electronics from the 98 or 99 merc you pulled it out of you would need to take the injection pump out of and earlier om603 and have it built to meet the fuel needs of the 606. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I would go with the 617, the 606 is a great engine but the amount of work involved in fitting it in the Cherokee was off the chart. I think if I was going to do another 606 I would go with a dry sump to cure the oil pan sump problem. If you are considering a DD, BOV vehicle the 617 is reliable and simple, will last forever and there are adapters available for it.
I am planning a production run of Jeep Cherokee's 88-2002 converted to the 617 Mercedes engine that will run on WVO or Biodiesel, equipped for use as a BOV vehicle.
