Haven't even bought one yet!

Hey,

So my wife and I recently got married and are starting to get some extra money. We want to start camping and getting outdoors and would like a new (to us) rig to help us get there. After lots of debate and forum hunting we have decided on a Cherokee (obviously... that's why I joined this forum).

We think we have made up our minds on one. A 1990 Cherokee Laredo that we got down to $3,000.
I don't know much about cars in general (learned a bit on a 65 mustang when I was 16) but I'd like to start. Ideally we were looking for something that won't need too much work but I don't even own one yet and am starting to catch the bug.

What I do know about it
nv242 selec trac
4.0L L6
89,000 miles

Beyond that I know that they are looking into why the electric seat adjust is not working. If they fix it they will call me on monday and say so... if not maybe I will talk the price down and still get it.

I am a complete newbie to working on cars, especially offroading and especially Jeeps... It just looks so good! Needless to say I will be flooding this place with questions... some of them very dumb...

PS interior is in great condition! Will definitely post more pics if I end up buying

Maybe this was posted in the wrong spot. But we are set on getting one and once we do we will be posting our build here...

Also, I will be taking suggestions for projects. Ideally I will want a roof rack and different tires.

Any tips on some usual upgrades that usually get done/recommended?

If it were me I'd go with something 91+ with an np231. That'd get you out of the remix era xjs which some people like but I don't think it'd be good for new to working on vehicles kinda guy.

Don't know where you're at but 3k for that xj posted seems pretty high.

i was just gona say the exact same thing. look for something a little newer. and 3k is too high for that jeep imo. heck i bought my 94 for 800. deals are out there i know your excited to get a jeep but dont just jump at anyone you find wait for the right one at the right price. although that one does have pretty low millage.

It only has 89k on it, and that seems reasonable. What's wrong with renix? it is very easy to diagnose if you know how to use a multimeter.

You are so right with the "excited to get one comment"... I am in the Cincinnati OH area and that one was only about $200 above most else that I was interested in and with ~60,000 less miles on average.

I was definitely looking at the low miles which I liked... As far as the renix goes, I have seen about a 50/50 split on opinions (okay maybe 60/40 in favor of the anti-renix)... I can definitely use a multimeter... I am a career electrical engineer...

I will think all this through some more. Need to decide by tomorrow cus another guy came in behind me to test drive it... If I go for it you guys can feel free to say "told ya so" if I find I was too hasty in my decision!

it is clean tho. paid 1100 for mine has its share of rust. and has seen many places. 249,xxx miles. good luck with the renix. just glad you didnt choose a wrangler!

dnuccio 09-30-2012 07:37 PM

even with the low milage, i still think 3k is steep for a 1990. id try to talk him down to like 2

rmoore1031 09-30-2012 08:26 PM

I paid $2,500 for my 1990 Laredo with 116,000. Interior is pretty mint on mine too. It's from PA but I'm in upstate New York. Anyway seems like $3,000 is top dollar. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you man, but I'm making mine for camping, BOV / Zombie Apocalypse :)

Haha, yeah my wife and I have talked about making it our survival car too. To go with our "bug-out" packs! Can never be too prepared. Looked through your thread, the interior on mine is about the same but blue instead of maroon. I personally love the blue color of the one I am looking at... just seems... classic I guess!

Looks like $3,000 is up there. Maybe I can talk him down a bit more. I'll let you all know how it goes tomorrow.

Another prepper on here. Good luck.

3000 is WAY to much. More like 1500 would be better. low miles on a 90 means that the thing sat or was barley used. but the jeep is 22 years old and things also degrade due to age. jeep cherokees have a rediculous long engine life. There are people buying these with 150,000 200,000 miles and putting a few G's into a build. If I were you I would get one with 100-150,000 97-99 (best years)miles for 1700.

Ive seen Newer models go for that price
