Default General Patton

General Patton reporting in!

Alright guys so I guess a little background is in order so if you dont like a good read just continue on down.
This XJ build is the second XJ I have ever laid my hands on but only the first one to own. Back in High School I was way into world war 2 so I decided to pay homage to that and call this jeep General Patton. Yeah a guy is naming his machine a guy, but c'mon man he was a war hero! So anywho my last XJ was a 99 on a 3.5" lift with 32s. It was the yarvis sport edition with the 4.0 I6. It wasn't my jeep it was my uncles. So he spent all the time and effort into upgrading it and putting sweet parts on it. The warn front bumper with the winch will always be a personal favorite of mine. So this jeep is going to be a lot like that one. Hella beat to ****, but running like the day it was bought.

This is going to be my build thread and after looking at other build threads I wanted to put some actual structure to this guy. Please subscribe and come back later to look at all the various updates I post. Now for the mat and potatoes.

UPDATE as of 5/21/2012 - Finally running properly and deemed "road worthy". I really need some pictures for this thread.

General Patton
Below are links to all of the different things that i plan on doing. Each Item in the list just takes you to a different post in this same thread so if there is not a link there it is because i have not updated it yet. Each item should outline every aspect of my jeep. So if you like anything I have done here there should be a write up of how I did it. This thread is going to be treated as my own personal little wiki of what makes up General Patton
  • Basic Info
  • Interior Upgrades
  • Exterior Upgrades
  • Cooling upgrades
  • Battery and Alternator
  • Lighting and Electrical harness upgrades
  • Suspension Upgrades
  • Radio and speakers etc
  • Links for references
  • Images
  • Anything else?

Anything that isnt related to upgrades is going to be listed here as maintenance. For example this out lines when I got my oil changed so I can keep track of that. As well as any sensors that I have swapped and why I knew to swap them (other than the check engine light giving a big hint). So the time I did seafoam will be listed here, Oil changes will be listed here, and thats all I can think of off the top of my head

  • Seafoam
  • Oil Changes
  • Air charge Sensor
  • Throttle Position Sensor
  • Coolant Temperature Sensor

Default Basic Info

I picked this jeep up on craigslist here in Phoenix Arizona. Was a very cheery little jeep I guess you could say. When I was looking at the vehicle the guy that was trying to sell it to me couldn't get it started. That was hilarious because I got in started it up on the first try and we took it for a test drive.

The engine runs great and only has 140k on it and since its the 4.0 I6 I would imagine that's the start of a long and happy life. Its a 1996 sport edition and it has the tow package so I was pleased with that. 4x4 works without a problem and without a single grind sound so that made me happy. No AC and the radio gave out a week after I got it. (not sure if fuses orrrr) The hoses were shot and the car wouldn't idle very well. Also it had a bit of an overheating problem I was told.

So to get it what I deemed "road worthy" I wanted to be able to rely on this vehicle. While I can rely on the engine to always start after a bit of coaxing this vehicle is my daily driver. We get horrible traffic here in the big dumb city so I was not about to be the one holding that traffic up.

Replaced all the hoses on the CCV which helped it to idle it seemed.
Replaced the hose that comes from the intake manifold to the break booster. This helped the idle to stay solid when I was hitting the break so that was good.
Replaced the rear tail light because that was broke when I bought it.

Default Links for Reference

These are just some reference links that I have thought to be super handy and I wanted to keep them around. I would love to get your guys feed back on these and please add in to them. It would be great if it became a mini reference manual that we could pass around the forums for a bunch of random crap.

first off I am told that this is a good way to get some detailed info on your jeep. From what I am told a lot of jeeps have random parts from random years. I saw one guy on here who was claiming his jeeps parts ranged anywhere from 96 to 99. That sounds like a headache so see if this helps at all: http://www.chrysler.com/wccsapp/univ...ull&category=U In the space where it asks why I am contacting them, I simply put "Requesting Build Sheet" I would like to thank cherokee forum member "restoring" for this gem.

the ****** MB
If you are at all like me when you think of general patton you think of him rocking his olive drab tank or his olive drab jeep. here is the jeep that is more or less inspiring my build: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willys_MB

MAP Sensor Mod
If you dont know what a MAP sensor is, take a look at this little gem: http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/MAP_adjuster.html

Tire Alignment
I dont care who you are and I dont care how many jeeps you have lifted compared to me. If you lift your jeep, you are messing with your tires to a degree, so why not take the time and make sure they are properly aligned afterwords? whats it going to hurt? save you some tread? here is how to do it: http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoAlignment.htm

Facts about your wheels
Speaking of wheels, this was a good bit of info on the basics of wheels: http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/wheel/wh...ts99/index.htm

Well here are the first few images I have. Entirely stock as of now so I am slowly pulling and replacing the things that need it first. Radiator is on the chopping block next. The headlight switch was just a silly endeavor to say the least!

So I did this a while back but I wanted to post about it in case anyone searched for it later down the road.

What is Seafoam?
Well take a look at this page here to see what Seafoam has to say about itself: How To Use Seafoam
So more or less its just a great way to clean out your engine without having to pull it all apart. You can put it in pretty much ever port in your engine. It does a great job at cleaning it out and it makes a lot of smoke.

Pre Seafoaming
So some people are way against putting it into your oil but I wanted to do that so I put it on in a few miles before my next oil change. The idea behind this was that it would help to get the seafoam flowing through the engine enough to clean it out. However I had to make sure not to put it in so early that i would end up making the engine run on lean oil.

I had only bought one can of seafoam so I only put 1/3 of the bottle into the oil. You probably wont need more than this. But all in all a good step one (but not neccasary) is to pour some seafoam into your oil

Starting the Seafoaming
So to do this there were a couple of videos that I saw on youtube of people doing this. I would totally recommend hoping online yourself and finding those videos. Its always good to know what you are getting yourself into.

Step two (or step one if you didnt want to put seafoam into your oil) is to put some seafoam into your gas tank. I put another third into my tank and I deemed that good enough.

Step three is to put the seafoam into your air intake.
A lot of videos people will just pour the seafoam straight into the engine through the throttle body, I dont like this at all personally. You would be much better off putting it through some of the vacuum lines and I believe that is the main suggested way of doing it.

Simply pull the vacuum line from the master break cylendar and start putting some seafoam in it. As I said I only had one can of seafoam so I only put 1/3 of the bottle in through the vacuum lines

Let It Run Through
So now that you have added a bunch of seafoam into your engine you just have to let your engine idle until its done making a boat load of smoke. You will see a bunch of smoke pillowing out of your exhaust and really waht that stuff is is all the carbon build up getting blown out of your engine. Heck yeah taking the years of build up out of the old engine of yours.

Post Seafoaming
So now that you have let it run through your engine its time to do some last finishing touches. If you put seafoam in your oil BE SURE to change your oil after this is all done. You put the seafoam in your engine to clean it out and its done that now, so get it out of there.

Thats about it guys. I would love to answer any questions you have and talk more! hit me up!
