The Desert Camel

Just picked up this 1999 as a quick build after I sold my 97 base Xj.

Here is picture of the 97 I built and sold. Now the funds from that are going to fund the Desert Camel

The Desert Camel is a 1999 Cherokee XJ Classic. 4.0/Auto/231 Hp30 8.25. Oddly this classic doesn't have tinted windows. Here are pics. It didn't come with the roof rack or light bar.

It does have 3" lift coils, ProComp I think. 2" lift shackles, and rubicon express super ride lower control arms as well as rubicon express shocks. Other than that, it has a few bumper pieces missing and a lot of detail work to get things started.

I've got tinted marker lights. A set of 1.25 wheel adapters. Rubicon 10a rims and bfg 255/75/17 tires so far.

I'll be doing black bumper corners and body colored flares on this build, just like my last one.

Sub'd, looking forward to seeing this come along. I really like the clean look of the XJ's with JK wheels, I considered doing that to mine at first.

MoparNJeep 08-23-2016 07:19 PM

Yeah JK wheels and especially the tires can be bought for great deals if you look around. I have four never used tires I bought one at a time for $60-80 a peice. I'm in only $280 into four new tires. Rims I had to shop awhile on though. The 10a wheels are still commanding pretty high prices. I'm thinking about going with the Moab wheels in the anthracite grey for this build. I really wanted to use the 10a rubicon rims but I think they would look better on a Green or silver xj. Will see how it goes. Either way going for a nice clean simple build much like the last one.

I really want to swap the seats out for some black 99+ seats add some rugged Ridge mats and have a good mix of the Camel color and black interior. I think that would just look sharp.

Few more pics of it as bought condition

After looking it over the lift on it is a rubicon express 3.5 super ride but in the back is stock springs and 2inch lift shackles. So I have a full length add a leaf and a set of stock low mileage springs to level out the lift.

Better pic of the smoked lenses. Looks much better imho.
Still not sure on whats getting blacked out as far as bumper corners, grill, door trim, etc. I think more black would help offset this jeep. Hard to find ideas as not very common color.

I found this one jeep which looks pretty good but wheels like that are not my taste or in the budget.

Double post

Looking good. I personally like the clean look of the color matched items like it sits. The subtle changes like the the smoked lenses and going to the gray Rubicon wheel would look perfect to me. But I can understand you wanting to make it stand out a little more.

I usually prefer the color matched look. This color seems like it would be better with a little bit of black like second pic. First pic just doesn't have the look.

This is really what I think the end goal will be. Except darker wheels. Thanks for the interest

Alright I'll give you that one, that last one looks awesome! I think I like that one better with out the rockers and flares painted black. Ironically enough the first picture from post #12 was one of the ones I had collected myself when I was starting my build.
