Death wobble at 40mph+
My 88 xj is 5.5inches lifted, had 33x12.5x15s on with stock rims, switched to new lighter pacer steelies wit 3inch backspacing with 31x10.5x15s , once I got 31s I started experience very bad wat I would call almost voilent wobble. Steering parts all tight etc, question is y feel it now and never felt with 33s and stock steel rims??? My guess was I now have lighter rims and tires, . Now wat can I do to fix this? I heard start with gettin a good heavy duty steering stabilizer shock , and maybe good tire balance

Should I just gettem balanced before replacing the stabilizer shock , they r used tires.... I traded tk get the rims and I needed smaller tire anyway.. But anyways... Try balance I was jist gonna do both.. Cuz the first time I drove wit the "newish" tires it drove fine no wobble at all but the next few days It got worse. I think I may have felt it a little before I got rid of my 33s it maube stabilizer shock still . But I think imma do both ??? Lol

ok if you felt it before you changed... sounds like something is outta wack... i guess you have "play" somewhere... do a search on death wobble, sounds like you in the early stages, which is good... theres def some slop somewhere... if you check the whole front end suspension and steering... dont let this thread go any further... you can find answers here but this guy is pretty cool as well...

I think I may barely felt it. Everything was tight except right front hub assembly its replaced. May have some bad bushings but those r being replaced as well. And next few days getting it aligned. Ill check that link tho B) could always use more info

Leave the shock off till you figure it out. The stabilizer shock will only mask your problem! Look in the XJ wrightup section for a thread call "diagnosing your death wobble" the man knows what he's talking about.

Keep in mind, the best way to look for slop in the front is to have somone turning the wheel back and forth while you systematically stare at every linkage/joint.

Now I also noticed... Right front , bottom steering bar( I dunno wat itz called) but the last bar closest to the ground. My right front side appears to not have a thick rubber bushing where the left side does. It looks lik as if one is not suppose to be there?
