I've been slowly fixing a bunch of stuff on this thing. So far everything has really just been small stuff (besides the transfer case).
When I bought it most of the carpet was torn out, but it still had it in the back. I decided to put my nephew to work cleaning and helping tear everything out. As you can kinda see, the interior is in decent shape.
The fenders being cut wrong let in a lot of mud and water, mainly on the passenger side. After it was cleaned up it doesn't look too bad, but definitely need to get the fenders fixed.
I've been wanting an excuse to get a welder and I think these rear fenders will be it.
Luckily the drivers side one is not this bad.
The next thing I fixed was the back hatch. Looks like someone tried to mess with it before, because the linkage was zip tied and the lock actuator is gone. I redid the zip tie on the linkage, and it works like a champ.
On to the door problem...
I didn't take many pics of this but, one of the previous owners cut all the doors hinges except the drivers door. The cuts looked kinda crappy, and I thought they might have screwed something up.
As I started messing with it I noticed all the doors were missing bolts, and the bolts that were there were pretty much all loose. So after run to the hardware store and putting new bolts in, all my doors close great.
While messing with the doors I found out why none of the electric stuff on the passenger front passenger door worked... it wasn't even plugged in. Once I plugged everything up it all works!
Got tired of the sound of the exhaust with just a cat
Got lucky and found out dynomax was having a rebate, so I got a catback exhaust for just under $100
Also went to the junkyard and picked up a airbox out of an older cherokee. Out of the 12 or so cherokees they had, only ONE had an intact box

Meant to say this earlier- thanks guys.
comanche- I'll definitely check out the group
Bigsquirrly- Most of the hinges themselves are good although one of the back door's hinges are pretty bad.
Lowrange2- I think the rust came after one of the previous owners broke the rear anti sway bar. Looks like it got ripped off and took some of the frame with it. The other half of the sway bar is still there, lol.
Hayden and DAcherocar- I didn't know Tcases could do that either. I guess since everything was there for the rear drive shaft it still worked. I could here it going down the road though.
kennzz05- so far (knock on wood) no problems with either of those.

Still playing catch up to present day....
Cherokee was driving fine but was giving me some problems starting, so I took a look at the starter. Found one of the wires to the solenoid didn't have a connector on the end of it and was just kinda barely wrapped around the post.
So I put a new connector on there and it fired right up
With everything running good I thought it was finally time to check out the brakes. Unfortunately I never noticed a small detail about the lugnuts. All of the lugnuts are spline lugnuts and the guy I bought it from never gave me the tool for them.
Taking my best guess I found some spline keys online and ordered this one
While waiting on that to show up I decided with summer coming up it would be nice for the AC to work. After a bunch of trouble shooting I narrowed it down to the low side pressure switch...
Using a bent up paperclip I now have AC!
A few days later the lugnut key got here in the mail. Unfortunately the starter decided to die that day. In case you guys don't know, starters for 99-01 cherokees are $130-$160. No way I'm paying that much. Being the cheap bastard that I am I decided to save money, so off to the junkyard I went once again. Apparently the junkyard changed its inventory since I was last there, because there were only a few cherokees there and none of them were 99-01.
Luckily before I went, I had been looking around the site I found this thread about using previous year starters... https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/87...rite-up-88369/
all I had to do was change one wire connection and the cherokee is up and running once again for $20.
This pretty much brings us up to today. While I was at the junkyard I also picked up a low pressure switch for the AC and put it in, so no more paperclip.
Future plans-
I've still gotta get the wheels off and check the brakes.
Get a welder and fix rear fenders
locker for rear end
bigger tires (maybe 33's)
ZJ tie rod upgrade
maybe bedline interior/ use diamond plate rubber mat that I have a roll of
??? who knows ???

Well, somebody jinxed me.... brother in law's car broke down and I was letting him drive my jeep. It was doing great for a couple days then (it sounds like) the thermostat was sticking and the jeep overheated a couple of times on his way to my house. Saw steam and water coming from lots of places. Pulled the valve cover today and looked, and the head is cracked.

Making huge progress, great to see another XJ saved. It's sad when people hack up Jeeps when they don't know what they are doing.
Keep us updated with progress
