This is a tough truck project that my father, one of our friends and I are working on. There isn't alot of money tied up into this thing, but I have well over 300 hours of labor into it.

1990 Jeep Cherokee
4.0L
AX-15 with stock internal slave
NP231
Non disconnect D30
29 spline C8.25 (Welded)

Let me know what you guys think.

Future modifications are fabbing control arms, trussing both axles, cage, and a 4.7 stroker I'm currently building.

96Cherokee113 03-13-2010 02:31 PM

Definitely want to see the stroker buildup! Also, did you swap in a 97 or newer rear? The 96 and under are a 27 spline 8.25. I'm not trying to bust your balls, just wondering.

KillerCOM 03-13-2010 03:40 PM

It was definitely the 97+ with 29 splines, pulled and welded the side gears myself. I've just finished the machine work on the block except for honing since I haven't bought my pistons yet. I'm looking at Bulltear's forged floating piston. http://www.bulltear.com/catalog/prod...roducts_id=242, the late 80's 4 counter weight and bushed rods from a 91 Cherokee. I'm leaning towards a Isky or a Crane cam. and hopefully a Megasquirt DIY kit. I'll have pictures of the block once I get it painted it'll be red of some sort, along with the 6.123" rods I side-polished.

I'll try to get some more up here as soon as I can.
:icon_cheesygrin:

I forgot to mention that I'm gutting some rear doors to have an extra panel and also fabbing a set of tube doors.

I also have some trail and race footage I could add, along with some newer photos, with the bumper I threw together.

But the main reason for doing this build is to get legal in both NMRO and EC4WDA events.

Got the paint for the block today, started putting a few coats, Dupli-Color Chrysler Industrial Red. Got the oil pan painted Semi-gloss black, Dupli-Color. Buddy works at an Advance pick it up for me on clearance and got his discount, 25 CENTS A CAN!!!

Thought I'd also describe the setup a little more. It rides on Up-country coils up front with poly coil spacers, Cherokee bastard pack out back, Comanche shackles with poly bushings (I added a grease Zerk). No rear sway bar, the front sway bar came off another Cherokee with the tow package. Stock control arms with poly bushings.

Last time I was home and race I noticed a massive leak from the transfer case, so I decided to pull it to investigate. Originally we thought it was the output shaft seal, not the case. The previous owners had JB Welded a crack in the top of the rear case half that was about 8 inches long!!!!:icon_eek:

So needless to say it was replaced, the funny thing is it never made any noises.

Thanks guys, yea he was born in raised out in Colorado, and cut his teeth wheeling out there. He's taught me a lot from wrenching to driving. Oh and this bad boy chirps through 3rd gear. (80 mph on pavement + no doors = not trying 4th hahaha.) I've driven a lot of XJ's and this is the fastest yet. It beats my 96. He raced my buddies 97 in the pictures posted, and missing 2nd still had us by a car at the end. hahaha

This was done a private road before anyone decides to rip me a new one

KillerCOM 03-17-2010 07:08 PM
