Black 98 Limited. Project....Needs a name

Greetings!

I'm a long time thread stalker and first time poster. I picked up my 98 XJ Limited a couple months ago, found on CL for $1500, it looked pretty good and only had 164k miles so I went for it. It is a Florida car so luckily there has been little to no rust, the only place i've found any was on the rear bumper underneath the end caps so I'm working on getting that replaced as soon as possible.

Unfortunately currently it is very stock. For the most part I think I want to go expedition/overland style with the build. I want to use it for camping/fishing maybe some light trails while also being able to throw my bikes and surf boards on top and head to the beach.

I'm by no means a professional when it comes to repairs or modifications but luckily from what I've read with XJs it doesn't seem like you need to be. I'm always looking for tips and tricks so please share your wisdom! Mostly I just wanted a place that I can keep a log of the things I've done to the Jeep and track my progress (I thought this might be better than the Lisa Frank diary that I found under the back seat).

Almost forgot, my name is Matt and I grew up in Michigan but now I live just outside Orlando. Sadly I haven't taken too many photos of the Jeep yet but I've added a few pictures from Day 1, a few things have changed since then but I'll go over those in the next post.

You are off to a good start. Maintenance can really go long way

When I started my build, I spent a lot of time on this and other forums just looking at everything people have done to theirs. I started an inspiration file and every time I saw something I really liked, whether it was wheels, roof rack, bumpers, Line-X treatment... I kept a copy of it in my folder. I even went so far as to find everything I wanted online and put a spreadsheet together with the estimated cost so I knew exactly what I was in for.

Once I had a vision of what I wanted to do, and the price of everything, all I really had to do was prioritize the list based on the money and time that I had available. Then I just chipped away.

Good luck. You've got a great starting point and now you're ready to get started with the fun part.

Thanks guys! Bmoflaz - that's a great idea! I'd just been adding bookmarks but compiling a folder seems a little more efficient.

As you can see in the first post the front drivers quarter panel is from a donor xj due to an accident. I was thinking about taking it in to Maaco and getting the whole thing done but I figured I'd give it a shot with a rattle can first to see how it turned out. I think worked out pretty good! The pin striping was easier to do than I had expected and I think it looks ok. Especially if you're standing a bit away... and squinting a bit. I also found a set of door guards at a junk yard and put them on with the 3M trim tape. They aren't staying on very well so I might end up taking them off of both sides.

When I bought the jeep the CEL was on, the previous owner said that it was due to a bad O2 sensor and he had one that he would include. When I got home there was another code firing too and it was the P0700 transmission range code. After some research I found that was due to a problem with the neutral safety switch so I removed and cleaned that and swapped out the O2 sensor at the same time. After that, no more CEL and way better gas mileage.

A quick list of the few other things I've done/replaced since I got it.
Got build sheet from Jeep (this thing was loaded!)
Replaced fog light switch
Added a cheap new stereo head unit
Swapped over to LED interior lights
Changed out a cracked turn signal
New spark plugs
Coolant flush
Added a cheap air intake I had from a previous car (since then I've found the swap was kind of pointless)

Last weekend I bought everything to build a roof rack and so this weekend I'm going to try and get it built. Going to the junk yard tomorrow morning to pick up another set of factory cross bars for extra support. Also going to try and find a rust free bumper. I might look to see what the stock is like to do a junk yard lift kit.

This past weekend I was able to get everything together and build a rack! I saw the no weld rack thread and made one that was similar using EMT/Conduit. Overall i'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. It is way bigger than what I would have gotten spending the same amount on a pre built roof rack. To anyone else that has built one, what (if anything) did you use to make the floor of the rack. I've seen a few different metal mesh variations but I haven't been able to find anything at hardware stores that seems sturdy enough.
