Good lookin' build so far! :-) Sucks about the salt and rust up there. They mainly use gravel here. Great for less rust, terrible on windshields. >.<

A good fix for tailgaters is some cheap Walmart driving lights that point to the rear. You could also use them for night wheeling or camping

Default Picking up momentum

Sooooo, for the last couple months I've been buying all the parts to get going on the rebuild of my HP Dana 30 & Crysler 8.25 29 spline.

New Remafg's front callipers from Napa:

Now, pay attention. I went to get remufactured callipers for the fonts (really didn't see any reason to go nuts with big brake upgrades). Here is what the pricing was (pay especial attention to the highlighted section)

Now, I purchased each caliper for$21.60 & the core charge is $46.91 per each. I thought that was a pretty good deal....

Since I had all the calipers off the XJ and new & clean I thought i'd stop by Pep Cheeze (boys) and grab some caliper paint.

I'll put a second coat on this weekend, and after that I'll be cleaning up the rear 8.25, paint it, put disks on, and then weld the new shock mounts.

I still have a handfull of parts to buy:
F & R 4.56 gears
F & R Master Install kits
Yukon Air locker
ARB compresser
Front Disks & Pads
U Bolts for the 8.25
Brake line tubing
balance of LED's for rear lights
Fab up new Brake Light housings...

I'm also expecting some parts to arrive in the next couple days... New Timken hub assemblies, front & rear wiper blades, & new shocks for the hatch, along with new E-brake cables.

Default Little Progress.....

Was tryin' to plan a wheelin' trip for Sunday, didn't happen & since the weather is finally starting to breaking here in Buffalo... I had a chance to do some minor work to the ol' XJ
1) put new wipers on all around (don't think there's a need for pictures)
2) put my new struts on the back hatch.... Wow, I didn't know that the hatch went up that fast or that high...

(Before) Had to use the tire to hold it up

Also added some more stickers to help horsepower....

Along with gettin' my axle builds going I've gotta attack the rust issue....

I'm hoping to order my gears & locker(s) in the next couple weeks. In between that, I'll start on the 8.25, sand/grid/paint, install the Tera Flex disk brake kit, new brake lines. Then onto the HP D30. can't wait to get the axles in & on to the next.. I'm thinking about tinting the windows & a new head unit & speakers. Can't see spending money on tunes when I could put that cash twords the lockers & gears.....

Yeah, once the weather warms up here I will be swapping out the stock head with a Clearwater head..it's already here. As far as lift I can't decide on 6.5 long arm rough country or build a 6" long arm from Clayton. I have a d30 HP and Chrysler 8.25 29 spline both with 4:10s to replace the d30 LP and crap D35. I want to run 33x10.50s. New exhaust, speakers, bumpers and kayak racks. ..for now that's my plans lol
Has 162k with 160-165psi on all 6 and 45-50psi oil pressure so it should last a while!

Finally got time to start working on the axles. Figured I'd start with the 8.25. I really want to get the rear disk conversion on.

all ready to start cleaning it up,

all primed up, used rustoleum primer (hope it holds up). Once the Primer dried, I moved into the garage, looks & feels like it's gonna start to rain.

Now for painting, was gonna use Rustoleum black spray paint, then decided I'd go to Tractor Supply and pick up some Tractor, Truck, & Implement matte black.

First coat on it, as I started to paint, sure as poop, it started to rain, good thing I moved into the garage....

Goal for tomorrow, put a second coat of paint on the axle & next week I'll start on the brakes. 2 things I gotta sort out, 1) do I go with the air locker for the front & LSD in the Cry 8.25 or do I run Spartans in the front & back (saves me a bunch of cash, but I loose the friendly road manners), 2) do I move forward with the HPD30 or just use all the parts on the LP D30 & rebuild that one..... I'm concerned with possible front drive shaft issues I may run into, I am at 6+" of lift so not sure if I'll have issues. Gotta pull some measurements and see what kind of drivelines I would have.

I am planning on buying gears very soon (having the house resided this week & gotta see what kind of cash I'm left with)

Yeah I know it started out so sunny today and got all crappy. And I used to be against running a rear auto locker till I got a great deal on an 8.8 with an Aussie and now I doubt I'll go back to an open diff or even a selectable. It's not bad at all. Took a bit of getting used to while cornering and as long as you're not too hard on the pedal its really not noticeable at all. Every once an a while it'll pop hard when it ratchets while turning which can be surprising but it's not bad at all. It does take a bit of getting used to in the snow too. I know it wasn't bad this year but as long as you pay attention it's fine.

Also kinda curious, why spend the money on the disc brake conversion when an 8.8 conversion is about the same price or less?

Got the 8.25 off a friend of mine for next to nothing. Straight swap, I don't have any welding skills either. I also sold a crap load of stuff on Ebay so I had like $2,000 burning a hole in my pocket and since I knew I wasn't going to go with an 8.8 it would be an upgrade. I was gonna go to the JY to get the disk brake parts off of a zj rear axle, but as you know, all parts are crap & rusted to sheit.

As for the rear locker, I had one in my TJ and I HATED IT. they are less expensive and my XJ isn't my DD so I'm not really sure. Biggest issue is my wife drives the XJ sometimes & I really wanted to keep the good road manners. Especially in the snow. The XJ is what we take when the roads are really bad. Front & rear Spartans may make it a bit harry...
