axle help

ive heard talk of dana 44's or ford 8.8s, but i dont know which ones to go with, and when I do the swap what kinda of things are going to have to be done, gearing, welding, bracketry ect, every thing and anything you guys can come up with you be a great help.

well the nice thing about the D44 is you have the possibility of finding one on another xj 87 in particular has a D44 depending on model i believe. The 8.8 i have heard is a good axle and you would then have disc brakes in the rear, you will most likely have to regear both axles to match and i know you have to weld on leaf spring perches, which is not a big deal. If i was you i would scavenge your local pick and pull and try to find a D44 on another cherokee. Im sure you know what they look like and if not a quick search on google will give you the just of what your looking for. What ever you do though don't pull one off of a grand cherokee i have heard they are a different metal or something of that nature and not as good of a d44

PS even if you find a D44 you will probably have to regear, my D44 on my 87 has 3.54 gears, however my 89 i got my front axle off of had 3.55 so i got lucky. I believe if it is a manual trans jeep it has like 3.07 or something like that..just something to think about before you go axle hunting..

if your jeep is an auto i believe you have 3.55 so if you pull a D44 off a 87 with an auto you will be cosher with stock gears

go with the 44 maybe u will get lucky an find some one selling a d30 an a d44 for 150 bucks ,,,,its easier to swap out both front an rear axles then to regear...also cheaper
