You have my interest. I have ALWAYS wanted to do this ever since I read this article on Grassroots Motorsports auto-X cherokee they built.

https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/fo...d/27247/page1/

Just wanted to share some pictures from our last autocross a few weeks ago. Out of 106 cars the XJ-R had the 10th fast time of the day beating out a bunch of prepped Miata's, M3's, a 400WHP 07 Lotus Exige S, Porsche 997 GT3 RS, plus a bunch of other stuff.

Alittle inspiration for you

That jeep thread is the whole reason why I bought my jeep a year ago lol, and cobra martys build as well are the main reasons why. And so far it's been worth every Dang penny.I can't wait to take it to the track to see what it does now. It broke yoke wears and universals all the time with a good 4000rpm launch and powershifting, well see what breaks now lol .

Little update on the jeep, Broke the yoke strap bolts off from a hard shift , so I had fun trying drill those out managing to break a few drill bits in the hole lol. Any way finally got the broke bits out and drilled to a 5/16 hole for the U-bolt mod ive seen some switch too. Back on the road now just fine still no intercooler yet, but otherwise running well having about 500miles on the turbo setup and so far so good.

Another cool little video for your viewing pleasure as well.

With the rear mount turbo, are you running an intercooler? Seems like the intake pipe running under the car to the front would cool down the air pretty well without an intercooler.

Exactly that's how I have it now, without. I'm in the process of putting the intercooler on so I can run more boost and keep it from knocking ,which it hasn't at all but I want to be safe. I'll have pictures up later today when I finish it up hopefully today.

Nice, the rear mount turbo's have always intrigued me as they seem quite simple to install really.

Yep basically the reason why I went this route, every thing I've done has all been off the shelf parts or bought online , I can return the jeep to stock form in 30 minutes, I wanted to make it as diy as possible

Right on, post some pics of the setup. I bought a bracket and pulley to do a blower, but the turbo seems much friendlier.

Another update, finished the intercooler setup, not too happy with the way I had to do it but it's just a temporary spot for sure , I'll have pictures of the whole setup tomorrow during the day. Any way boost now comes in at a whopping 1400rpm 3-4psi and full boost within 2000rpm with a remote mount turbo. Intercooler helps immensely with lag and also made the spool of the turbo sound even better some how. Next step is a dyno run to see how much power it's gained, I'd say any where from 50-80hp to be safe looking for 200-220 to the wheels and I'd be happy. Definitely feels faster, and acts like a Dang diesel truck now.

Here are some pictures of the current setup, ingore the extremely ghetto intercooler setup lol, I need more silicone with different bends in order to make it a front mount like I want, just have to make some brackets for it. But here where Im at now.

Intake piping with blow off valve.

Custom intercooler setup lol but hey it works at 80mph.

And the rest of the piping running back to intake.

Definitely still needs improvement , but now I know that this idea works and I am going to work on perfecting it.

Here is a little parts list of all the pieces that went into the build so far:
Ebay T04e turbo-$150
Ebay intercooler-$60
Turbo oil Return Pump Ebay special- $78
Intake piping I got from the local performance shop-$40
Silicone aluminum connectors- $30 for 4 of them
Oil lines are heater hose from autozone so far so good with those- $15
Oil feed and return fittings came together for $20 with gaskets also Ebay special
39lb cobra injectors I had laying around from my brothers 2003 terminator cobra-$0.00
Safc-2 Fuel tuner and Wide band guage bought used for $200 for both, guage needed $40 bosch sensor
The Silicone couplers themselves 2.5in were $10 a piece I have about 6 or so -$60
Other misc items that I can not remember-$50?

Total price so far- $703, If I were to do it again I would probably be able to do it cheaper now that I know what works and could have cut out some unnecessary items.

Thanks for the list. I am going to start collecting some parts. How is the tuning with the SAFC?

Tuning with the SAFC is quite tricky actually , it works great at wide open throttle with the adjustments , it's part throttle driving that seems tricky , the 02 sensors pick up on the changes and the safc and computer fight each other in closed loop driving ,cruising around . The key is to make the jeep run in open loop all the time that way you can basically control the jeep fuel with the safc no matter where your foot is. Another thing is when I go into boost there is a bit of a stutter just before it builds boost, not sure if that's the map sensor or just needs more fuel from being lean. I unconnected the 02 to keep jeep in open loop and that seems to help it out a bit. Still learning this tuning deal my self as well.

Well I just got done doing some more tuning with the jeep and it really "hauls the mail" now no pun intended lol, The problem was that the 39lb injectors I have were so big that under no boost it would over fuel the engine giving me the missing before it hit boost, all I had to do was turn the low throttle setting leaner and man it is a whole different animal. Now it has a kick you in the pants type of feeling when you roll into it! I will be however going to smaller injectors as 39lb is a bit over kill because with the Safc you can only adjust a maximum of +/- 50% fuel rate, even at -50% my idiling AFR is at 10.6 :/. resulting in a vehicle that gets no joke close to 8 miles per gallon.. I feel like 24lb would be close but Im not sure if they would have the flow rate for the top end of the rpms I would need. I'm going to see what I can find in the neighborhood of 28-30lb injectors and see what I can find.

Any way my brother and I had a friendly run together with his 2009 Acura MDX Suv $40,000 price tag when new, and before I was turboed it was some what of a good race with him pulling hard on the topend. I would be able to keep a fender out on the intial hit and then hed pull away. Now however its a whole different story, went from a second gear roll 30mph with me at about 2300rpm to start. 3 honks and were off with him jumping out ahead because at the time I still had the rich overfueling issue, after those stutters ended the boost came in strong at 8psi and before I even shifted to 3rd I had already regained my ground and about 4 car lengths ahead by the time I ended 3rd close to 90mph or so. Very happy with the results so far, and can not wait to go to the track and dyno to see what it does.

Thanks to all that are looking into my build and I hope your getting at least a fraction of the enjoyment that I am lol.

Tony

And to better answer your question B16gsr, now that I have figured out how to correclty tune the car with the SAFC it works flawlessly.
