Almost There
This weekend I am going to start my new build, its gunna be a very difficult and challenging build. My ETA is 2 months...
The Donor Jeep - '96 XJ
(bessy) I6 4.0HO 4X4
AX-15 5spd
D35HP front
D35 rear
3 In lift, rear full pack and shock, front full Coil and shock
31x10.50 Trail Cutter RT
181,XXX
The New Jeep - '96 XJ Classic
I6 4.0HO 2X4
AW4 4spd Auto
Locked 35 rear
Stock Height Stock tire and rim size
164,XXX
The Super Jeep - '96 XJ Classic with the badges from the other Cherokee
(Maya) - AX-15 5spd
- 4 In lift, Rear Full pack with shackles, Front 3 In coils w/ 1
In poly spacer, 4.5 In shocks
- Bull Bar grill gaurd, custom designed by me on autoCAD
- 31x10.50 Trail Cutter RT Tread 95%
My questions, will the rear axle gear ratio be the same, if not how much will it be to change gears in the front Axle to match the locked rear, will all the steering linkage be the same in both?
Cant wait to start this build, its been in the making since sept '10. Finally got a jeep in great condition, no just on or underneath

I'm a little confused on your question. there is no D35 front axle. and if you are swapping 5 speed transmission jeep axles onto an automatic xj, yes the ratios will be different. cost of regear varies. $200 is a good deal on the installation price alone
and if you're going to regear you shouldnt do it to match you should upgrade.

Thanks for the help, I realized about the front axle after I posted it, and the only reason I was going to re gear it to match was bc of the locker. Or will a locker work no matter what gears they are? And once I get started I will be sure to add lots of pics!

and unless you pull parts from a junk yard...
-ring and pinion $200
-complete install kit $100
-professional installation $200
so $500 for stock gearing??
edit: hmnm ok I see what you're going for here. the "1996 donor jeep" has 3.07 gears but you need the axle because your new jeep is 2x4
the new jeep you have has a locked rear D35 with stock 3.55 gears (I'm assuming).
you cannot put the front axle from your donor jeep into your new jeep. it's not worth the cost of gearing. it's a better idea to go pull a completely different front axle from an automatic xj so you can keep the higher gear ratio of 3.55. then sell your old axle or keep it for spare parts

Okay, what would be the best front axle to try and get from pick a part, and thank you for your help. And to answer your question I believe its a lunch box locker but I won't know for sure until get it apart

you're only gonna run 31's? just a 3.55 gear dana 30 from an auto 95-99 jeep xj then.
or just swap the lunchbox and keep the 3.07 gears and not spend any money on a different axle

Upon further investigation both jeeps have a Chrysler 8.25 rear!!!!!! and yes im only gunna run 31's maybe 32's when i get ballsy and trim the fenders. i believe im just going to keep the 3.07 gears and swap out the locker.
