97 xj 2wd to 4wd swap

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I have a few questions. I'm looking to slowly acquire the parts to swap my jeep to 4wd. From everything I've read so far any jeep from the same generation is an exact swap. Basically, drop, swap, and bolt it on.. My main question is, what is the oldest year I can use, and what is the newest? Basically what is the years of generation.

Also, like I said earlier.. I plan on slowly acquiring the parts, so my next question is, can I buy a 4x4 transmission and rear drive shaft and put that in and run that till I get the transfer case, front drive shaft and axle. The main reason I ask this is cause my transmission I currently have is having issues along with my clutch. So I was thinking on just throwing the 4wd transmission and rear drive shaft in while I have the transmisson out to replace the clutch.

Last question, is there any sort of electrical stuff I would have to have? My transmission is 5 spd manual. If that makes a difference

If I said anything that was completely dumb feel free to correct me. I'm still learning haha.

Thanks in advance!
