'92 XJ " The Legacy"

Ugh, should have started this a while ago.
About 2 years ago I got my XJ from my dad, which he got from my aunt. They kept it stock, but it was abused a tad, from long trips, beach cruises in Nags Head, and well normal PO Jeeps.

Cupholders
Chrome, Chrome everywhere.
150xxx miles on clock, too bad speedo was dead for a year, so it's about 50xxx miles off I was told.
Oil leaks everywhere.
Exhaust leaks at manifold and tailpipe.
Hand to hand combat with sun against paint job.
Bunch more fun things I'll remember later.

The first thing I did when I got it, was slap in a K&N air filter, since that was all the rage with the people I was hanging out with. And to slap on some stickers to establish my metal sexuality.

Don't mind the deer dancing. Next step: the sound system since this wasn't cutting it:

I threw in about 1k$ and got a bunch of good deals on:
Alpine Type X Pros 6.5" speakers for the front doors.
Pioneer TS-D6902R 6x9 speakers in separate boxes in the back.
Kenwood X600F Amp
Pioneer DEH-P6100BT Head Unit

Screw a subwoofer, these beasts are more than enough for Heavy Metal, techno, and any odd tunes kinky ladies like to play when they are riding shotgun. But also, I ended up getting a Optima Yellow top, since I killed my stock battery jajja.

Next stage, after the jump

The Lift

After a while of bsing around, trying to save up for a good lift kit. A friend at the time got in touch with me about 3inch springs and leafs, and a set of wheels and BFG A/Ts 31x10.50 for 300$. All of this was coming off of an XJ a guy sunk on a power line trail (which the puddle had a freaking 35-39inch tire standing up in it almost covered, so you know, smart things going on).

So after the purchase we gathered around and slapped it on. The front was easy as hell, the rear.... well we had to cut a bolt out the rear driver side spring to get it out jaja.
After the lift:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1789.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1794.jpg

As you can see, fenders flares had to come off, otherwise they would while turning one day anyway jaja. Tires are low as hell on thread, and I need center caps. Also neck beard.

Oh well look at that, the springs in the front (from an S10 I later heard) ride rough. New shocks all around. And 4wd has a nice sound to it that sounds like a loose chain.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1814.jpg
oh well center caps. On wheels that probly are not American Racing.

From this point on, it was a lot of minor things.
-Fuel filter (wtf stock)
-Getting pin stripes off
-Blinkers going out, fixed
-Oil leaks, fixed by Dad's Mechanic friend (valve cover, oil filter adapter)
-Upgraded Fuel Injectors, wooo 703's I believe.
-Also forgot to mention, totally new Cooling system, save for the fans and heater core.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1909.jpg

Then new tires: Definity Dakota A/Ts 31x10.50xr15

New wave of BS after the jump.

Diggin it so far. I have the exact same xj as you, minus the color, i've gotta white 92 laredo auto 4x4. I also encountered the lazy odometer and my total which says 179xxx is really closer to 210xxx, and I also have 3 inches of lift, only difference is I'm on 32's.... Oh and also, the first thing I did when I got it was put in a new sound system as well haha.

AbsoluteAggressor 07-01-2011 09:24 PM

Transfer Case. Sigh

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1958.jpg
Oh... so that was that noise. NEVER put off replacing your TC chain! I'm sure a bearing was gone too, but still.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1959.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1964.jpg

Yeh, there were holes, so any fluid I put in in the past, drained out. I'm surprised it didn't explode on me. I originally had chain in hand to fix it, but after seeing metal shavings and such, decided to just replace with a remanufactured TC. Also, I HATE SAND, so much oily sand landed in my eyes, teeth, there were pounds of it under there.
So this ___________ to that______
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1956.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_1966.jpg
Only clean thing under there.

Now that 4wd works. I bought a new tailpipe from Quadratech (16$? good deal). And a ran a muffler delete for a while, which was annoying. I ended up putting on a Thrush Turbo after a while, sounds quieter, which I like, too many truck bros around here.

Afterwards, I did a few needed things:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_2054.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_2055.jpg

I forgot where it appears in the timeline, but fender trim, rust removal, and repair to where I backed up into a tree (actually on a trail, Shoe Creek, and the only damage I got, kind of embarrassing) Oh well, paint job sooner or later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_2289.jpg
Look at dem sway bar links billy! And BPE's front and back, oh lordy. That cured part of the death shimmy at 55mph.

Trail pics, Sand pics, and otherstuff I don't have in my Cherokee picture folder. After the jump.

How's your seats doing? I noticed mine (well, not the driver one, since it was replaced before I got it) are all sagging backwards. Could just because my aunt's side of the family is a bit... large. Also I had to replace the speed sensor to fix my odometer, and I found out that the gear was off to begin with, with 31s it's right on the money.
Sounds systems ftw.

Afterwards, decided to finally to the Rear Main Seal. Come to find out the oilpan gasket is aftermarket, so that's been fiddled with before, and that was also leaking.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_2318.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...J/IMG_2319.jpg
Urg, still leaking from the rear of the engine. So I probly failed, I'll get to it again another day.

Nags Head:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-44-32_229.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-42-22_824.jpg

I hate the beach. Got stuck twice after stopping to help others. Didn't let out enough air in tires. Fail on my part.

OH LOOK AT THAT, Valve cover is leaking again, and the rear bolts were finger loose. At least both the inside and out of the valve cover is now clean enough to cook meat loaf in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2-22-14_75.jpg

That all brings this to where I am at today, minus all the things I forgot, since this has been 2 years worth of stuff slammed into 4 posts.
Angry Eyes? Yes, No?

Man that sure looks like a lot of fun. Nice XJ BTW.

IZAREBL 07-01-2011 10:29 PM

haha they are kind of uneven, but diggin the jeep!

AbsoluteAggressor 07-02-2011 03:11 AM

Thanks a lot guys!
Yeh they are, luckily it's just electric tape right now. I'm going to be super OCD about the actual painting.

DRUNKEN DIXIE 07-02-2011 08:58 AM

Nice Jeep, I vote flat black paint!

kenjen11 07-02-2011 09:38 AM

That's what I'm leaning towards. Or a really dark grey with a slight blue tint. Chrome accents really limit paint job choices.

Thanks and thanks!

Front End love.

Well, since I finally got some income to throw into the XJ, I decided to fix the front end up a bit, so it rides like it should.

As stated above, the front was lifted with an S-10 spring for about 3inches. So I decided to get some IRO 3" Coil springs (rough country). Here's the difference between the Stockers, S-10, and NEW IRO 3inch.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-01-22_919.jpg

Lordy, does it ride better. I also went ahead and got new bump stops (which don't fit, thanks Quadratec. And also some HD IRO Spring retainers (screw self tapping bolts). Afterwards, she rides perfect now! No clunking, bouncing, and the springs actually rest on the isolator! However, the toe is now off :(, so I guess I gained a faction of a inch in lift ha.

Some where during the sands of time I ended up getting new headlights, since the XJ had a black eye, and it was starting to annoy me. I ended up buying a set of Sylvania SilverStar Halogen Sealed Beams. Night and day difference, and I can actually see at night! High beams are glorious now.

A week later, decided to go ahead and do a Tune up.
-NGK V-power plugs
-Cap+rotor
-Fuel Filter

I still have Accel wires, and they looked good as new, contacts and outside, so screw replacing them this year. NGK feels so much better accelerating and idling than the old Accel plugs (I'm stating this from memory when I just put in the Accel plugs last year). All normal ware on the old components, so all is well.

After reading a thread here, I decided to ditch the "Air silencer" in the tube from the stock air box. I didn't get a mpg boost, or power, but I will say accelerating feels a bit more smoothed out and proper. Must be in combination with my bored TB.

My next major move was to replace the stock Track bar, since with the new springs, bump steer was more noticeable and was annoying the living piss out of me. I decided to go for IRO's Adjustable Double Shear Track Bar. Holy balls, it's beefy. I hugged it for a while when I unwrapped it.

Comparsion:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-13-31_547.jpg

Installed:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-07-14_285.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-06-54_655.jpg

After about 4 tries at trying to get it just right and centered, I got it with help at the wheel. Afterwards, I went to go get her aligned to fix the now worse toe, and put my steering wheel back center (it was half a turn off after track bar :pinch:). The XJ feels great now, haven't had a chance to try out the flex, but I'm sure it's going to cream my pants.

How she sits now:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-10-40_503.jpg
... Actually that might be before the track bar, but oh well.

Currently, I'm saving up for some IronMan4x4 control arms, a ZJ v8 Tie rod, and finding bump stops that fit. After that, the front end should be golden, till I get new break lines and shocks to handle the flex that may soon come. I also have a Class 1 hitch I need to sand and paint, but I'm being really lazy about it ha.

Update:
Thanks to school and work I havn't gotten to a lot on the jeep. Just little things:
-oil change w/Valvoline Maxlife Nextgen 10w30 + K&N oil filter.
-Tore off the old and grummy headliner on the sun blinders? Whatever you call them lol. Gotta wonder why they are black with a purple square on the back underneath.
-Rotated tires
-New front brakes, Wearever rotors and Wearever silver pads. Feels much better! Stops on a rather large dime now.
-While rotating tires and brakes, painted the drums black with VHS's wrinkle paint, looks alright, stole the idea from a YJ buddy.
-Finally got around to trying to fix the lock on my glove box that stuck while in the mountains camping. Picture included on why it is broke, the metal lever that would release and push on the spring snapped inside the mechanism. Fun fun, looks like a small, stupid thing to pick up at the junk yard.

It's been a while. Since my last post:
-Alternator died
-Ground Battery Terminal connector ****ted out
-Found out my Ignition Coil was cracked to hell.

Things I've done to my XJ:
-Replaced Alternator with OEM NEW replacement. (ooo shiny)
-Replaced battery terminal connector (not a big deal)
-Replaced my Ignition Coil with an ACCEL one.
-Fixed the glove box lock finally with pieces of a junkyard xj's.
-Replaced various missing doo dads in my xj from that junkyard xj
-oh **** handle caps
-Rear bench seat adjuster caps (I ****ING LOVE THESE, my fingers no longer hurt when I have to put the seat down)
- Renix horn button. I don't know man, I just like how it looks.
- Took the "Man't Required" light out. **** that thing, I already replaced my O2 sensor.

And the doosy I just finished on my XJ.
Installed a 2.25" Thunderbolt Metallic Catalytic Converter. Which one could consider High Flow and full of fun! Installation was kind of a pain due to how close the stock cat is to the cross member, and how my muffler inlet was a bit warped. But with some welding action (not mine, friends) it all fit with no leaks. Sounds pretty good with it and 2.25" pipe with a Thrush Turbo muffler. The drone at 1kish is a bit much though.

And how about a nice engine bay shot:
