I happened across this MJ to help a buddy out in a bind...

$400... only real issue is that it needs a head gasket.... besides the obvious

Kinda have let it sit for a few months now, thought i would just use it for parts as i needed them but Other plans i had are changing and so this one will be getting some much needed attention!

4.0 6 cyl. 2wd. high miles... rusty here and there but the frame is still solid!

I've always wanted to to a super low build = 35" +/- tires with as minimal lift possible....

Kahki tan/brown with black trim for the body... desert camo interior, some military touch's inside.. ammo can-deactivated grenade-couple ammo shells.

hopefully have the head gasket repaired this weekend.

Perfect candidate for a flat bed!

I'm jealous!

Can't go wrong for 400 bucks. Good news about anything you do to it will be an improvement at this point. You going to have the head checked or just installing a new gasket?

the standing plan is to just pull the head... clean and smooth out surfaces, new gasket and re-assemble.

If things don't look so good then proper steps will follow ;)

I've gotten pretty lucky to have a very supportive "soon to be" wife that lets me do my thing... so When a cheap cheap MJ comes out of the word work and i have some project ideas i've been wanting to try, Within reason-She's all for it!

More progress with great deals though:

traded for a set of these 31" goodyear authority A/T's... (originally on aluminum rims). Then i picked up a set of these cragar d-windows from a co-worker Cheap! $60 set of 5 rims... first 4 were pretty ruff, but a trip the the sandblaster and some rustoleum paint takes care of that.

That's great man, it's always nice to have a supportive other half. I'm looking to get a 5 speed, 6 cylinder, 4X4 Comanche but those are few and far between here. Great deal on the rims too!

right now (atleast around me) it seems the 86 mj's are all over the place... mostly 4cyl's though.... but the 5 speed 6cyl later models are around also. Just most of the sellers are on the "its a rare truck" kick and want top dollar.

So I knocked out the head gasket yesterday ~6hrs of work and it already sounds and runs a little better.... Didn't run all that bad before but its a noticeable difference.

Now ideally, this motor should prolly be rebuilt... Each of the cylinders had a small lip at the top from wear, but its a $400 project and spending $1100 to rebuild the motor just isn't in the budget. So this motor is a ride till I die, then swap another one in.

skipped a few things i normally do when getting a "new" vehicle, new plugs and wires, thermostat, motor mounts and some other things so i'll be taking care of those this week as well. Then possibly some paint and maybe the lift soon after.

That Jeep Guy XJMJ 08-30-2014 10:33 PM

So i've hit a pretty big bump in the road.... The motor is now junk..

i'm pretty sure the head is cracked.... not long after changing out the thermostat and letting it idle the exhaust went cloud white and after a short drive the motor is junk. Motor now has a pretty bad stutter to it. Immediately after pulling it back up to the shop i checked the oil and it was completely goobered up like snot...

Not sure whats next for this project... It may be short lived :icon_rolleyes:

this is the end for this purple MJ... Its not getting scrapped just yet... it will be sitting in one of the you wrench yards for a few weeks first and hopefully be picked fairly well before its end.

For now though, i'm hoping to scoop up another one with a solid drivetrain to kick-off the build with my cheap parts score's.

Attachment 252764

I stopped and took a look at this one today ^ ^ ^ But no such luck as the frame and unibody was absolutely toast! ^ 6cyl 5-speed 4wd too :( ^
