how does the hack n tap work exactly? im new to all of this and im not exactly sure. does it take the place of the SYE kit or do you need both? by the way...i got some more work done this weekend. i got the crossmember up finally. so the transfer case is completly installed. i just need to put the drive shafts on. i need to either replace the whole rear driveshaft or get a new slip yoke for the rear one. how do i know if the u joints need replaced. the guy that gave me the jeep said that they were recently replaced but if i need to replace them i would obvously rather do it now. I also changed out the valve cover gasket, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor, and rotor today. i should have it running next weekend. im goina change the belt and the thermostat and water pump and see if she will fire up.

ahh yes...my seal does leak however..but it doesnt drip on the ground, the driveshaft is well lubricated :P...for the u-joints, if you grab each end of the u-joint...for example, the slip yoke and the drive shaft, if you have any twisting play it fails. hints are to look for rusting cap seals. if there is rust, the seals are not sealing, letting water or whatever in, causing corrosion. or squeaking. also, if you move the slip yoke around while holding the drive shaft still and it feels rough, or it feels like its skipping, also another sign of a failed needle bearing inside the cap....just make sure there aint no clunking, and make sure there is smooth and easy movement...you will be good to go.

whats up everyone? i did some more work this weekend. i got the valve cover gasket finished up, changed the belt, got a new filter for the air intake, changed the oil, and started assembling the center consol....well mainly the shaft the you switch gears with and put it into 4X4...lol im not sure what you call it exactly. havin a brain fart. anyways here are some pics of the progress. let me know what you think. i painted the valve cover just for the hell of it and i think that it turned out pretty well. i tried starting it today and found out that i was trying to jump a junk battery, but the lights and everything came on for the first time in 6 years. hopefully ill be able to get a battery this week some time. ive got to get a new rear slip yoke for the rear drive shaft yet and install the front drive shaft and it should be "driveable" (i still have the seats taken out). The last pic on here is a bracket under the jeep that i have no idea where it goes. Its mounted onto the transmission and it right behind the shift linkage for the transfer case. if someone can run out and look at their jeep i would appreciate it. :thumbup1:

heres another pic of that bracket and my motor. also, does the air filter being there defeat the purpose of a "cold" air intake? i would think that the air being sucked in right there is pretty warm? I though that the cold air intake was supposed to go in place of the factory air box? i was thinkin of fabbing it up to go where the factory one was.

Yeah that linkage is a mighty important one for the transfer case be warned that it isw a b#$! to get back in place from the experience i had with mine. Looks like all and all it's coming along well. As for the hack n tap sye kit thats what you have to buy, that is the sye, you will hoxever have to but a driveshaft in addition to it if thats what your refering to. It's well worth the money in my opinion i was glad wen i put one on my 99.

There should be threaded bolt holes on the side of the transmission from what i remember. My 4x4 is back home in PA, i'm in TX right now and the XJ i have here is 2x4, until i convert it to 4x4 that is. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/images/icons/icon10.gif But yeah as i remember it bolts right up to the side there and there's a sensor behind that bracket once it's mounted. I wirked on mine over a year ago and my memory is a bit rusty about the exact placement of that bracket and all but i'm 97% sure thats where it goes.

ive looked and didnt see anywhere where it could go...ill have to look again

i bought a new battery today and installed it and tried to start it and it wont turn over. all the lights and everything work. i tried the turn signals and headlights and brake lights and they all work. the clock even lit up and i heard the fuel pump so i know that everything is getting power. but it wont turn over at all...it didnt click it make any kind of noise..i turned the key and the clock shut off and it did nothing. im going to check all of the fuses and possibly take the starter out and take it to auto zone to get it tested. any other things i could try?

check your starter relay as well it should be in the fuse box under the hood if my memory serves me right. My bets are on the starter though..it is probably seized up from not being moved in six years, get under the jeep smack it with a hammer a few times, not to hard mind you just a couple good taps and try again, if that doesn't work then pull it and get it tested if all your fuses are good.

well i got it started today but now i have a new problem. it over heats pretty quickly. im gona change the thermostat and water pump as i already have them on hand. im not sure what i did to get it started. i put it in neutral and it turned over forever and finally started. i put it back in park and tried it and it turned over and started again. one other thing...the dash light in the attached picture come one when the key is in the "on" position and the annoying buzzer comes on. when i turn the key to start the jeep the lights go off and it just cranks and cranks and cranks until those light come on again and then it finally starts. im thinking a relay or something might be lose or blown or something. anyone know what it could be?

i think it might be the ignition switch??

Nice build so far man! ;) & I see you got it started so I know its not this but, in case it ever happens. Make sure you have it in park as my friend couldn't get his ZJ to crank 1 day and he kinda left it in drive...I was like are you serious man we sit here for an hour waiting on your friend to get here, test all the fuses, tap the starter, and I walk around to try and turn it over the there its is sitting in drive....lol You could try hot wiring it straight from the battery to the starter if that will work on a car like it does on a four wheeler? My uncle works on four wheelers & dirtbikes & I learnt that from him btw not a thief! ;) lol and good luck with your problem whatever it maybe! ;)

2 doors are pretty clean looking that's what i have i love it and that xj has alot of potential good luck with this project.
