87 MJ Comanche Build

Hey yall im Tyler
Heres some backstory on my MJ. Back in the summer of 2010, I had a friend. He had bought a 87 Comanche for $200. He knew I was into cars, so he said if I helped him fix It I could have it when I turn 16. Well after I learned what a Comanche was, I was like Heck Yeah! Well in March 2011 he sold it because he needed the money. April 2011 he was involved in a accident and died. Well I asked the guy who had bought it if he would sell it. He didnt want too. Fastforward to Nov. 2011. I got a call from the guy saying he needed the money and just wanted to get rid of it. Attachment 345534 I was happy. So I got some money together and went to go look at it. I was already set on buying it. I got there and this is what I saw: Attachment 345535 Attachment 345536 Attachment 345537 Attachment 345538 Attachment 345539 Attachment 345540 Attachment 345541 Attachment 345542 Attachment 345543 Attachment 345544 Attachment 345545 Attachment 345546 Attachment 345547 Attachment 345548 Attachment 345549 Attachment 345550 Well I cranked it up and it ran so I bought it for $200. Rented a tow dolly and it was delivered to my grandmas on Thanksgiving 2011. I have some pics but can't find them right now. Anyways it sat in the yard for 2 days because I couldnt get It running. Put gas in it, charged the battery, put new fuel filter in, then I changed the spark plugs and it fired right up! So I pulled it out into my grandmas garden and made a little video. Please excuse my voice. http://static.photobucket.com/player...1080_12629.mp4 Well after that I had my dad drive 3 hours and bring the trailer from Asheboro NC to Brevard NC where I had bought the Jeep. We then drove back to Asheboro after loading up. Funny enough on the way home a guy that worked at a gas station wanted to buy it because he thought we were scrapping it. Now this is where I started slacking on the pics. I got it home, washed it, and took the bed off. Total PITA. The bed wasnt even bolted in. Only thing holding it down was the gas tank, and it still was a PITA to get off. Then after thaf we reinforced and welded the door back on with REAL bolts in it. We painted the gas tank, and the rear of the cab and front of the bed. Put the bed back on and regrounded it. Only took us a week or so ti figure out the problem. Then I decided to see how bad the floor rust was. Took out the Vinyl floor..... Holy ****! The floor on the drivers side was horrible... passenger was fine though. I have a video somewhere. Will find it. Started lightly tapping the floor with a screwdriver to see how bad it was. The hole was only slightly bigger. But I can still fit my whole 13.5 foot and shoe through the hole. I drove it through the neighborhood just to see how bad the handling was with no front shocks for sway bar.... Scared the living **** out of me. It felt like a lowrider with the way the hood was bouncing. Rolling deathtrap. Good thing was it sealed one of the 3 leaking tires! Then one day I took it mudding. See, the retard who had this before me broke of ALL 4 of the bolts off into the pinion yoke (?) And so I couldnt connect the driveshaft. But I still thought it could make it through a little mud. Attachment 345551 Attachment 345552 Thats me stuck. Since then its just been sitting being cranked every now and then. |

I spent a while trying to decide what to do with it. Most people have problably seen nicer ones in junkyards. This MJ problably belongs in one.
Pics from the beginning of the year Attachment 345521 Attachment 345522 Attachment 345523 Only thing I don't like about MJs is how hard they are to find parts for. After all that I bought a 89 XJ 2 Door for $400 from a guy down the road for MJ parts. The XJ runs and drives. But no title and 280,000 miles. Well last night I was talking to my dad and I decided to finally tear apart the MJ.
So I went up the hill to where it was parked and put some air in the tires Attachment 345514 Attachment 345515 Attachment 345516 Attachment 345517 Attachment 345518 |

Well I finally got a small update. I bought a peice of 22 gauge steel to fix the floor, new motor mounts, and a valve cover gasket. Its raining today so I can't do anything. After I get the motor in Ill start bodywork. No reason for it to look nice if it don't run. |
Keep up the good work. Your comanche is in better condition then mine was when I bought it. At lease yours ran. Sub'd and look forward to the progress.
