I have a question since you are working on this a lot it seems, would the doors fit on a 96 xj? I have the opportunity to buy a set of doors off of a manche but I need to know if they will fit first. thanks.

Yes, 4 door Cherokees from '84 - '96 will interchange with '86 - '92 Comanches and vice versa. The only thing that will differ is the outside key lock.

So, tonight I decided on a whim to start the official 4.0 swap in the 'manche. I began by removing the hood. Had the wife help me hold it in place while I removed the bolts and shims. Then the front header panel came off. Next the bumper, then the radiator and support brackets and various other piddly crap until I got too tired and loopy to continue. Just wanted to make this small update. The plans are as follows:
- Swap out 2.5L/AX4 and put in 4.0L/AX15 (external slave)
- Modify front crossmember to support 4.0L radiator
- Cut out firewall as necessary and weld in appropriate piece from donor XJ
- Replace leaking steering box while I have tons of room
- Paint engine bay top to bottom
- Swap dash and all that goes with that
- Swap trim to match gray dash
- C8.25 rear end with disc brakes (will probably come wayyyy later)
- Etc, etc.
Waiting on my Renix flywheel to get here from the Triad. Anyway, pictures!

Real Men take the hood off by themselves.... LOL
Just messing with ya, although Ive done it before and it sucks. It sucks even more trying to put it back on. So whats with the renix flywheel? Not doing an HO swap?

No, mainly because the XJ I'm pulling the 4.0 from is a '90. My buddy's XJ (the one you got the tires from) is being parted out and I'm getting the engine, computer and wiring harness from that. I was going to do an HO swap and I actually found a '96 XJ complete that a guy was selling for $700. Could have swapped everything over, but he sold it the day I was going to go look at it. So now I'm going this route. Should, in theory, be cheaper since the engine is free to me as is the other parts I need. Renix controls are more simple although OBD II would kind of be nice... Oh well.

Yea, I'm trying to make this my "fuel efficient" Jeep. If a Jeep of that age can really be a fuel miser lol... But the engine from my buddy's XJ has been rebuilt at some point. According to the PO, it had 15k miles on it when he sold it to him. No way to verify that of course.

I'd love to do a diesel conversion, but like you said, $$$.
