4cly to 6cly 4.0L engine swap
Hello fellow Jeep XJ owners,
I own a 97 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0L and it's my daily driver and i love my jeep to heart! i will be buying another jeep, 85 Cherokee for $550 and its a 4cly and blown sadly, but it gives me a senior project to do. I want to put a straight 6 engine to swap out the blown 4cyl motor and lift it and put bigger tires on it and make it my awesome weekend wheeler/ crawler. but the problem is i don't know what would it cost me to convert engine and what to do. I'm hoping you guys can follow this thread as I'm in the build of my newest jeep. but i need advice and help as i go through and I've taken basic auto up to auto tech 3. so I'm very familiar with the inline-6 jeep motors. but first off will the engine swap from 4cly to 6cly work out smoothly or will there be any modifications?? please tell me your experience and advices if anyone has done this kind of swap. i will post picture of jeep tomorrow. thanks. |
The cheepest way to do that would be to get a 4.0 XJ and swap everything over.
enigine trans tcase wiring harness computer exhaust sensors accessory brackets etc..... |
So better off getting a jeep that already has straight 6 in it correct?? but is it possible to to convert from 4cly to 6cly engine swap? what would the overall cost you think? I'm trying to do cheap but willing to spend lots if have to.

A friend I wheel with did the swap in his Wrangler and it was not easy at all to say the least. If I remember correctly he had to swap the whole cabin harness as well.

The 4.0 wasnt an option in 85 so it will take alot to make it fit they used a 2.8 v6 in 84 to 86 the front end is a little longer on the jeeps with the 4.0 i would look up doing a 3.4 or a 4.3 or even a 350 theyres a build on here a guy put a 4.3 in his xj

They put the GM 2.8v6 in SOME 84-86, not all. Some had the 4.0. Engine bay is all the same from 4cyl to 6 cyl. The only difference between the two is that with the 4.0 the radiator is mounted more "in" the front clip while the 2.5 is mounted "outside". Simple fix of getting the radiator brackets. Like they said, get a whole jeep or maybe just an engine that comes with everything. You CANT use the radiator from the 4cyl, as it will be much too small for the 4.0 in my opinion.

Nvm, looked it up and you're correct? Which is odd because i've owned an 84 with the 4.0 lol
|
Cheapest way to go is get a donor 91 or newer and dig in. Cost me 700 for donor plus rad. and fluids!
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/member...-squirrels.jpg I went from a 2.5 to the high output 4.0 |
Thanks guys for the advice, i will now do an engine swap on a beater that already has 4.0L just to make it easier because of the radiator and wiring system would have to be replaced as well and mountings.
I will be looking for a different jeep now so if anyone lives in Oregon, Washington area finds a perfect build jeep let me know! I cant wait to start on my next rig for a project!! |
