1991 Jeep Cherokee Briarwood
 

While mechanically in good shape, it is missing a lot of the interior pieces and has much cosmetic damage on the exterior.

I have been looking through the forums, and am stuck with one question I cannot find the answer for.
What years/models are interchangeable?
Since I need new seats (trashed and the electric system is destroyed), carpet, headliner, consoles (those are the major missing parts) what years of vehicles should I look at, and what models. When chasing down parts sometimes the suggestions are wagoneers, or grand cherokee.. but the body doesn't look the same.
Also looking for an undamaged "nose" (the fiberglass piece as well as the grill that goes in it). From the other vehicles I have worked on I know that sometimes parts look the same, but aren't.
Bumpers, for instance, have driven me nuts on other vehicles, one year difference can make a huge difference where the mounting points are.

I have spent time working on 60-66 GMC trucks (talk about oddball parts to find) and Corvairs as well as some more common vehicles (Ford Aerostar) but this is my first (okay, wife's first) Jeep. I'd like to bring it back as close as possible to "like new" condition, with appropriate improvements.

So, before I go out and spend a lot of money on parts that may not fit, what years/models cross over to a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Briarwood?

Today was productive at least.
Found the hood latch parts in the back, the "kid" got bolts for them and we installed them on the vehicle.
So now instead of a rope and zip ties, the hood actually closes and latches. What a concept.

Took the driver's seat out because the wife needed it moved back and someone tore the wiring out.
Turned the seat upside down and found the crappiest welding ever! Brackets are welded, maybe, together and they tried to weld the seat tracks. Chipped off one weld, well actually put a screwdriver on it and hit the handle with a hammer and off flew one of the welds, or as the kid (guess I should call him by name, Kyle) called it "slag welding".
Put power to the motor and it shattered the slag on the other rail.
So we were able to move the seat backwards enough for her to drive it. But I definitely think we are going to look for new seats and bases since these are messed up badly. There is even a block of wood wedged under the driver's seat and it and the bottom side of the seat are covered in burn marks. I am not the greatest welder ever, but if I ever welded this poorly I'd sell my equipment. At least one weld is broken, a crack right through the built up slag.
I guess it is time to walk the wrecking yards.

I had better go back to the tech forums, I like what I was reading about injectors so I'll need to keep an eye out for those as well.

Ran into some financial problems and am annoyed as heck now, but have to get rid of the Jeep since it is "extra". So much I wanted to do, but...

Reality sucks.

Been there, done that. Sucks, but life goes on.

What sucks is I cannot find anyone who wants it.
So I may end up fixing it up after all, since watching it rot away isn't something I want to do.

I was given a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo for "parts" although they suggest I just swap the motors (and go from 4wd to 2wd).
Now, from what I can see, there is almost nothing that will swap between a Cherokee and a Grand Cherokee, much less between a 1991 and a 1994.

I love my friends... they tell me they can get me a parts Jeep, I tell them it has to be a Cherokee -not- a Grand Cherokee... they tell me no problem it is a Cherokee... dropped it off after dark last night, and it -is- a Grand Cherokee. <sigh> I was hoping for some body parts and interior.
I did not want to swap engines (and somehow doubt it would be an easy conversion to 4x4).

I am hoping I can find someone who knows what might change over between the two.

I've got a 91 Briarwood myself, sorry to hear you are having troubles. Any Cherokee 91-96 parts will be basically bolt on. There is some ZJ and WJ grand Cherokee stuff that fits with some work. That thread that was linked above has some good info, good luck man don't see a lot of Briarwoods on the road, would hate to see it waste away.

What is wrong with the Grand? It could be a blessing in disguise if fixing it was simple. The Grand is a more comfortable ride and your wife might enjoy driving it better than the XJ.
If the Grand is too far gone the seats will go in the XJ.

We have been told the Grand Cherokee has a cracked block. BUT until we look for ourselves, taking that with the proverbial grain of salt. All I know is *some mechanic* at *some shop* looked at it and pronounced it dead and in need of a new engine. Even though the engine runs real smoothly, and as long as you keep water in it, it will drive just fine. It is also just 2wd.

The biggest problem I have with it is that "the owner cannot find the title" so he will get the lost title paperwork going. When he gets a chance. And this vehicle has come to me through my daughter's friend's husband who has been relaying all this. He has been bugging me for months to get this vehicle from someone he knows (see how little I actually know) and finally gave in to shut him up (and hoped parts would work since I kept asking if it was a Cherokee and not a Grand... he insisted it wasn't a Grand...)

Habit of mine, if I do not have the title, I do not put a wrench to it. So the Grand will sit for now.

Sold a bunch of parts for 60's vintage GMCs so I have a little cash, enough to buy a 2-door Jeep Cherokee with no motor and no tires BUT clear title, good interior, swingarm spare carrier, good bumpers, appears to be a serviceable grill surround (or whatever the nose piece with the JEEP on it is). So I am hoping to get that here in the next couple days and as things warm up (I hope) I'll start stripping it for what I need. I know door panels and interior side panels won't work, but seats, carpet, console, dash parts, dome/cargo lights, etc. should work. From what I read the only real difference between the 2-door and the 4-door is the side door and window and that the seat folds forwards. Otherwise what I have found indicates this should work.
I'm only a bit leery of the 1985 (2 door) to 1991 (Briarwood 4-door) swaps. But everything looks the same so far.

You get one Jeep and as soon as you decide you are keeping it and going to work on it suddenly more start popping up, so do Jeeps proliferate like weeds?

Looks like my backyard. Nice GMC, apache camper and would love to know more about the VW.

My other "loves".
At one time 13 GMC trucks, 1960-1966. Down to about half that, hopefully getting back to working on them soon.
I had 4 Apache popups at one time, down to 2 (neither with operating lifts, one canvas side the other as you see in the picture, hardside).
I kept that VW from going to scrap. I've had it several years now, sadly this summer when we had a group clearing out the brush in the back, one of the trees twisted as it fell. It didn't take out the guy falling it, but it did hit the back of the VW. A critical blow I'm afraid. Saddens me because it was in good shape except for the front (hit a deer I was told).

So the "kid" (extra child, friend of our daughters) took apart the Grand Cherokee and found one heck of a crack. Not only was there a small pinhole above the freeze plug, but there was the really long crack from the front (unused) tapped boss to the rear (unused) tapped boss. It was the pinhole that was leaking though, so before he took it apart we thought it might be just a small hole in the plug itself. No such luck. But, a couple days work and he has welded it closed. Ran it for an hour with no leaks. Friday we take it on a trip of about 75 miles each way, wife will drive it while I follow in my truck. Spending a couple days helping my dad put a new floor in their bathroom.

Can't wait to see just what the kid has done around here when I get back, I am almost afraid to leave him here alone with all the tools and all the vehicles. He hates to be idle.

I am almost afraid that he will have swapped over all the parts on the two Cherokees before I get home. That is supposed to be *my* fun project for the wife.

I should mention that the people we got the Grand from have the lost title paperwork provided by their friend who used to own it. -so- that is why he went ahead and dug into it.
