How to find out who owns land in order to get permission

Hey guys,

Im trying to take the best approach at this so here it goes.

I live in the southern burbs of Chicago. About 30 minutes from my house near a town called lockporte are trails. These trails are easily visible from the road. I see people's truck with trailers parked on the side of the road all the time and see them riding around on the trails. I've looked this place up on google maps and the trails go far far back and are pretty extensive.

My questions is how can I go about finding out who owns the land, because I won't just go and start driving around without permission. I don't wanna make anybody mad/ get in trouble.

I know people that ride there, but they don't care about permissions. *shaking head*

Best thing to do is ask around. Are there neighbors near by?

shooter5635 01-23-2011 07:58 PM

There is what looks to be an abandoned house and some stores. Other than that nope.

Have you checked with the store owners to see if they know who owns the property? Other than that I would ask some of the people that ride there.

The stores are walgreens and jewel. U doubt they would know/care. I would ask the guys but that would mean chasing them down on the trails unless I get really lucky and get them when theyre leaving.

Go to the office where you would pay your property taxes. They should have a huge book of your county that shows who owns what in land plats.

Property owners

Previous post is correct. Go to the county seat (courthouse) for the county the land is in. You should be able to access the tax-roll maps. You might even have luck looking online. Some of the counties in my area have all their maps online.....nice.

Yes the map books are even available for the public to buy. My dad was in land development and had a few of the books I know there was a web site he went on it for me 4 years ago but I forgot were it was.

if you google your county and add "parcel map" most counties have them on the internet and 9 out of 10 you click on the property you want to ride and it will show there name phone number mailing address and how much they paid for the land! example: GOogle search = "walker county parcel map" hope this helps

shooter, it is nice for a change to see someone who cares about where they are going and doing the right thing by asking the owner. That makes all of us look good and not like a bunch of jerks. Good job!
