Default FlagPole

Anyone have directions to Union Springs/Flagpole coming from Charlottesville? I know it's not far, just need directions to the trail head. Also, is camping allowed there?

Flag pole is super simple to get to, how familiar are you with the area? If you know how to get to Harrisonburg it's simple from there.

If you can get to Harrisonburg you get on 33 west going towards west Virginia you follow it through court square and just stay straight it's going to be around 10 miles and you will come to the mountain. Stay on 33 and follow it up the mountain when you get almost to the top there will be a road on your left that says switzer lake take that road and follow it around the lake It will take you up the trails that trail will dump you out in one of 3 places hone quarry union springs/quarry or reddish **** wv by sugar grove navy base.

They don't allow camping at the bottom by the lake or quarry's but up at the top by flagpole an a few other spots you will see camping spots and flat areas that people have camped out.

Camping is defiantly allowed at Flagpole, only primitive though.

Please stay on the marked trails up there so we can keep it open. All of the trails are stock friendly.

Here is a pic at the top with my Commander friends(I ran my XJ). We have our east coast "Camp Commander" there each summer.

Your welcome, yes def. please stay on the marked trails and keep the trails clean over the past few years they have been discussing closing those trails from people trashing the place. There used to be a place at the bottom of that mountain on 33 called salt shed on you left just before you got to the mountain where you could sink your jeeps in all kinds of mud pits. There was one called the bathtub that very few and far between could make it through, but about 2 years ago now they shut the place down from people dumping there unwanted tires and beer cans all over the place so vdot and the park service built huge mounds and put up gates at all the entrances to keep everyone out. It took a group of nearly 30 volunteers a week to clean up the mess and try to get it reopened but they said it would happen all over again and that if the wheelers didn't take more care with flagpole it will be next.

Yeah, "Tread Lightly and Legally" is what I hold to. I only wheel where I know I have permission (known public land or if I have written permission). I hate seeing trash on the trails and I clean up as much as I can every time I go out. I kills me how many people treat the world like their personal trash can. I'm not a tree-hugger by any means (come on, I drive a lifted XJ), but i definitely hold to being a responsible wheeler. Always good to hear someone else say it too though!

I def agree with you every time I go wheeling I clean up trash lying around and the trunk of my xj looks like a dumpster by the time I leave. I'm going to do my part to keep the trails open for as log as possible.
I'm not a tree hugger by any means either. I have a 00 xj on 6.5" rough country lift and 33" tires and a 98 Tj on a 4" with 33" tires and both have mods. I'm about to be adding more mods and upgrades to both in the next few weeks.
Don't be intimidated that I'm a female i hold my own on the trails and can 9x outta 10 get myself out of a bind.
You said you are from Cville right? Do you ever go to shoe creek/ Crabtree falls? That's my favorite place to go!

I'm actually in Virginia Beach, so heading there I go right through Cville. Yeah, Shoe Creek is pretty fun, as is Big Levels. Good trails to just relax on.
