I have been hearing from every Jeep owner i've ever met near me that they don't know of any local (and legal) trails to go on. Well considering I have only been the owner of my Jeep for about 4 months, and hadn't been offroading too much before I bought it (at least not since my parents had a Land Rover when I was a little kid), I have already found a considerable amount of legal and usually challenging and fun trails all within an hours drive of Albany.
I think im going to make a running thread about all the trails I encounter (at least the ones that arent too good to let the secret out) adding in new entries as I find new places in the area, Ill try to keep it NY only but if I find other places in the immediate northeast I may add them in as well.
Despite what many say about the trail selection in my neck of the woods, I feel NY state has some of the greatest variety of trails and terrain in the country, while we may not have anything as extreme as say Moab, or the Rubicon we do have area's that can challenge even well built Jeeps, and be fun.
In NY our terrain Varies from;
Rocky

Muddy

Sandy

Wet

To Just Kinda Rough

And Ranging From Easy

To Challenging (Not to make this a fish story but those rocks are taller in person)

Plus we have beautiful scenery and neat stuff to look at

I will be adding detailed trail writeups of almost everyplace I have been, including directions on how to get there, difficulty, pictures and anything else that I find noteworthy. Anyone can also feel free to do anything similar of they know of great places and have the ambition to make a writeup. Also keep in mind that everyplace I have pictures of so far has been within an hours drive of Albany, so you dont have to get way out there to offroad in the great outdoors. Keep an eye out for my trail reports, I will be adding them steadily as I have time over next few weeks.

Those look like really nice trails. I prefer mud myself. Also, in the 3rd picture from the bottom, is that a cliff on the left?

How did you determine these were Legal trails?
The quickest way to lose access to a trail is to post it on the internet as a free/legal trail. This is why you dont read much of eastern trails and reports on the net. The New England guys learned the hard way long ago... so they are the most tight lipped until you get to know them.
If in fact these are legal trails you would be well served to keep it on the down low. Dont post directions on the net.

I know they are legal because I usually off-road on snowmobile and ATV trails owned by the state, which I dont forsee them closing due to use by Jeeps since they already get a good amount of use by ATV's and the like. I off-road in area's that are questionably legal occasionally which also tend to be the best spots, though I dont intend to post about them either.
All the ones i posted pictures of are 100% legal since they already get heavy use from 4 wheelers and the like and im sure a extra few jeeps going through as well arent going to get them shut down.
