I had heard down in St Mary's County the sheriff deputies were sitting on main commuter roads and watching to see the same cars and trucks driving. The number of **** box cars I see driving on Rt 3 through Crofton into Bowie something needs to be done. It is going to mess people up who actually take care of an older vehicle but maybe they try it and see what happens.

That's another article on the same site, and they're all from May. According to the MVA, they still aren't done "revising" it, so I don't trust anything older than the announcement they just made.

Probably safe to say the historic tags have not been used in the sense intended by the state. I think it's pretty clear they were intended for something like a classic car that would be a weekend driver, going to car shows, etc.

It gets a bit ridiculous to see people driving things like a '95 Honda Accord to work every day with historic plates. I can't really blame them for wanting the further restrictions.

I see both sides of it and am sympathetic to the folks here because most seem to care about doing the right thing with their vehicles but I see more instances of abuse than actual proper use in my daily commute, mostly guys hauling junk with homemade plywood sides on a pick up that appears as if it will crumble to dust at any second. My XJ could have been tagged historic but I still put it through a safety inspection. The punch list was not that bad so I fixed the items and put regular tags on it but if the list was too long I may have gone historic and worked on the list over time. I imagine this whole migration is money driven more than anything else.

I understand them wanting to close loopholes. My problem is that they announced it with a timeframe of less than three weeks, and they still haven't given the actual text of the regulation. It takes effect on Oct 1, but they're still "amending" it.

My problem with it is that Maryland already restricts so many personal freedoms, and now they're going after my hobby.

It cost me $2k to get my '01 XJ through inspection when I moved here. Yes, much of that is because I bought a vehicle in rough shape and didn't know better, but it had no problem getting me here from Ohio.

Now I have older vehicles, which I have chosen to purchase and spend more time and money maintaining instead of buying something newer, and they suddenly fall under a different set of laws that restrict my use even more. This occurs without any effective warning, and there's no grandfather clause for people who are already registered.
