GPS what's the best for trails
 

Looking to get a gps for EUGENE THE JEEP an i wanted to know what one would be good for going on trail in the pinebarrens in south jersey. I seen Pepgirls has a TOMTOM for $80 ,do i need to get one that has maps on it or what, But i don't want to spend alot of money on the GPS . Just going to use it for the trails. any info will help THANKZ EUGENE THE JEEP

i think the best thing you can do to navigate the pines is get yourself an iphone or anything other kind of smart phone that has a good provider so you always have service out there...and when you get lost just go to the googleearth application and it will tell you exactly where you are with an overhead SATELLITE view of all of the trails. i think the satellite view is important because it can show trails that you wouldn't know are there otherwise and so you can spot gates and huge puddles before you have to drive all the way to them. the problem with a gps in my opinion is that not everything in the pines is a road, although a surprising amount of roads out there are named and show up on the gps

get yourself a garmin handheld, like the garmin colorado, garmin oregon, or even an older gps map20 cx.
then download the topographical maps.

but make sure it's a handheld, not a nuvi. (those are just street nav, for your car)

well i'am on a buget like none haha .looking for something not priced to much. I have an alowance that i can spend right now

then i would do what caged suggested and get a cheap handheld...i've used them for my boat at night just for a reference and they work pretty good, for my jeep all i need is the verizon navigator...for like $4 a month you can have a fully functional gps in your phone, its gotten me out of the trails a couple times too

WHERE would i look for them , a handheld on ?

you know i'm not really sure. but i imagine they are pretty easy to find on the internet and if you have a good sporting goods store by you, they'd probably have handheld ones for hunting and stuff. thats the kind i would get, something that leaves a line of where you've been so you can find your way out regardless of any roads.....on another note you takign eugene wheelin? because i'm pretty much free for the rest of the day

you can get topos for the nuvi's too! a handheld works great with a window mount, and a nuvi with the topo program is my favorite (but a bit more pricy) i like having the bigger screen of the car gps.


i have an OLD magellen gps that is really big but uses SD cards so i loaded a topo program on it and it works great!

the first hand held gps is a great little basic GPS, black and white screen, i have one that i use for backpacking, great device!

the nuvi like you posted has a 3rd party GPS program that you can get. whatever you decide, hand held or not, search the model number online for a topo program to make sure you can get a topo program for that exact model.

they also make USB sat receivers that you plug into your computer and can use your comp as a GPS topo program.

I had a cheap $50 receiver that ran off my USB port and talked with a program i have on my mac(mac only program) called Trail runner which is a free map program that runs off USGS topos and other maps views
