I don't habe my winter project yet. I will be trying to buy a stock height XJ with solid floors and rockers. It may not even have a motor at time of purchace.
I know how I'm going to build it, but where would you start. Upgrade axles, lock it? Maybe lift it first? Maybe even stiffeners for the frame?
I'm trying to put together a build sheet before I get the XJ.
BE HONEST!

I would think if it has no motor i would be doing that first. Not so much instaling, but getting one. No matter the other mods you do,without a motor it is just a paper weight. Then decide what you want to do with it. Rock crawling, muddy trails, or just want a cool looking 4x4? Tire size will come into play. What size tires do want to run? Then lift height. Then if you want 33s you will be needing to beef up the drive train. Me i just do what bugs me the most or what ever demands my attention. Good luck.

As for lift I'm doing a RE 4.5 with Notch Customs flairs and 35's.
I'm just looking for innovative mods I may not know of.
