Default Why not to wheel on private land

Last night, my friend and I went wheeling at around midnight, and ended up getting stuck. I got my Cherokee stuck and my friends 2-wheel drive expedition. We didn't use his expedition except when he tried to pull me out, and somehow he ended up slipping in and we both got stuck. Then I guess one of the family's in a nearby house called the police and they showed up. After being searched and putting Cameron, my friend in the back of a police car to take him back to his dads house to wake up him(he didn't know we were out) and he was all pissed off because at this time it was close to 1:30 AM. Then my dad had to come as well with a tow truck, but luckily Cameron's Dad used his 4x4 expedition to pull out the 2x4, but mine was still stuck so we ended up waiting about 2 hours. And at the very end of all of this. The police let us off with written warnings. Mine was for trespassing, and Cameron's was for being out past curfew and trespassing. Oh, I'm 18 btw and Cameron is 17.

But I will say something funny that happened was when Cameron was being escorted back to his house the police made fun of my Jeep for not having a lift and mud-tires on it. And that the flashlight I had was about the same as a candle.

Good to know that you learned what most every one else already knows in the 4x4 community...

The cop was nice to just warn you when you should have gotten tickets.

I got a written warning the one time I went wheeling on private land (in my defense, it wasn't even marked as private until about 3/4 mile into the trail, at which point I turned around)

I wish there were more legal places to go.

You're lucky you have such understanding dads. I would have hauled my kid back home (with a smack up side his head for having woken me up with that kind of crap) and then let him figure out how to get his Jeep out on his own.

Now you know what it means to own a Jeep:
"With great power comes great responsibility"

There are LOTS of legal places to go...your job (should you choose to accept it) is to go find them. {insert cheesy M.I. theme music here}

Damn straight. Look at skateboarding. Back in the day you couldn't skate anywhere that was actually fun and legal. There was only one skate park that was semi close, but we didn't have a car, so we just hit the streets. Now kids got it good with all the skate parks that cities are putting up.

Guys talk about growing up and having lots of local spots to go to with zero issues. Now everything is developed over and you still have folks that want to go off road and no where legally to do so. I wish greenies and gov't would realize that if you want to restrict land use, then open up more parks so people can do it legally.

Back when I used to trail run, I'd run all these awesome trails at our local park. There are a chit ton of trails and hardly a soul out on them. I really wish they'd open up some of the trails for OHV use. I would pay for a yearly pass and I'm sure the park would appreciate the money in their coffers (considering our state is closing parks left and right due to lack of funds to keep them open). They already have a camp ground, concession area, fishing lake, beach, boat rentals, trails for bikes, hikers, and horses... so why not some ohv action? Think of all the money that would come in from opening up some of the trails to us. More jobs, more wheeling, more money... Hey, I can dream, right?

But yeah, more legal places to wheel would be great.

You are on a jeep forum that has a strict stance on illegal wheeling. You should have know better. That's what gives offroading a bad name. Everyone that saw me jeep when it was on the road on 34" LTBs would ask me if I wheels construction site or muddy farm fields. I would respond "no that's illegal and the reason why we don't have more places to wheel legally"

I don't see why it's such a big deal to get into some mud... it's not like you're hurting anyone, yea it might be dangerous for you, but that's the risk you take, right?

Not that I go illegal off-roading or anything, just playing the devil's advocate.
Just a thought

After last night, I no long have any interest in illegal wheeling(not that I was interested in doing it illegally, but you get what i mean). But I was wondering if anyone from the Columbus Ohio area knew of any LEGAL places to go? There's a place called JeepSkool but that is kind of expensive, and would like a place closer by. And does anyone know who, and how to contact a political figure in the area to make one? Would a county trustee be able too or would it have to be the governor? if anyone knows anything about politics or anything...

Polly because the land owner don't want you to try to do something to them legally if you get hurt on their property .

The police told me that the reason they came in the first place is to make a record that we were actually here, incase the construction company finds damage and needs it to be fixed, that they know who to contact to pay for it(us).

its people like you that give fellow jeepers bad names... plus your friend was an idiot for trying to tow you out with a 2x4 car... there are plenty of places, you just have to look around!

Yeah that is understandable. I guess just to cover you and the land owner. We wheel.on private property with permission. But yeah I can see the reason for the report. Least they where cool about it

I'm sure you learned your lesson from the experience and I guess it does suck not having anywhere to go wheelin' legally. I'm kinda spoiled where I live as there's no shortage of places within 1/2 hour to get out there and get muddy...even living right in the middle of a major metropolis.
Hope you find some place nearby.
