Question What Grand Cherokee For Off Roading

What are the best years for a Grand Cherokee to use on and off the road ?

Do they have the same running gear that the standard Cherokee does ?

Are there years to avoid all together ?

How is the fulltime 4 wheel drive models ?

I'm comming from buggies to jeeps and I'm not familiar with the Cherokees .

Thx ,
Gonzo

If you get a GC with the 4.0 then yeah its about the same as the Xj's... most will have the upgraded transfer case with the full-time option but still a 2wd mode. This would be my recomendation. The ones with the V8 are all a fulltime 4wd system. Which is fine for daily use stock, but once you start to modify it, that may get in the way with larger tires.

IMO, the best years for the GC was from 1999-2004.... sharper and easier to find too. Just curious though, why not an Xj?

I wouldnt waste my time looking for a ZJ with a 4.0L, once you add a lift, armor and bigger tires, its hard for it to get out of its own way. I would try to find a 5.2L or even a 5.9L. The WJ are also great for wheeling but the aftermarket world hasnt caught up yet, like they have for the XJ or ZJ.

I'd really just look into getting a XJ, they are cheap and easy to find for the right price.

Agreed, everything is much more expensive for grands. The only benifit i see to a grand is the rear coils so if you planned on building a rock crawler that wouldnt be a bad idea

Thx for all the responces .

The reason I asked was that I find loads of GC's but the XJ's are hard to find in my area . There are a lot of wheelers here in Wellsville , Ohio .

Regardless , your opinions matter and you've talked me out of the GC's .

thx

i have both a xj and a wj and you will find endless options for a xj where as the wj world is very limited at the moment. hopefully they start making more stuff for the wj soon tho!
