Default Gave up on the jeep.

Cadiz ohio. Well after I searched and search for a glean cherokee. No luck. I did however pick up a rust free 1 owner dealership maintained all its life with records, 1997 toyota 4runner. 5 speed 4wd with of course the only reliable v6 they make. The 3.4l . Sorry to switch to the dark side couldnt pass it up. Locals, if you have meet up points maybe we can meet up and wheel.

Its blue, but mainly looks like amethyst pearl from the cherokees. It fades between blue purple and black depending on lighting

Trevor, from west Columbus in Hilliard. Grew up on my neighbors 341 acres of woods on 4wheelrs. Now lookin to do the same with my Jeep. trying to get it as far away from stock as possible, only thing done is the headliner and fuel rail with 4-hole injectors. Any good (cheap) ideas or places to go around would be greatly appreciated. Hope to go wheel'n with some of ya mates soon.

No, that baby was a piece. For reference, we're discussing the 2001 XJ with 137K I went to see at the auction on Friday.

My local auction (and probably all auctions, I don't know) posts the public sale list online the day before. I download it every Thursday, looking for an XJ. (http://www.gcaacars.com/)

Finally, an XJ gets posted! And it has low miles! But it has that cylinder head that nobody likes...we'll see.

With the "low" mileage (137K), I was prepared to bid up to $1000 if this thing was in good shape. But is was in bad shape, very bad shape.

The "GOOD"
Started right up, clean engine compartment, clean interior (except for cigarette ashes here and there and Hay (like for horses) everywhere.) Bright green antifreeze, clean lenses/signals....the "Good" is done.

The "BAD"
The whole underside is a rusty mess, like the mighty Titanic at the bottom of the sea floor. The floors are missing, it's just insulation and carpet underneath. The rockers are missing. The leaf springs are almost inverted. A ghost in the glove box.

The Auction Process:
Auctioneer started the bidding at $2500. Good luck. No takers. $2k. $1500, "a thousand bucks...what's someone wanna give me for this...?" No takers. "ok, take it out of here..." The porter starts driving it out...

Decent drive-train and interior. Maybe I can use it for parts. I REALLY want a Jeep. My hand goes up - "$350," I say.

Auctioneer wakes up (speaking auctioneer language): "Ok, $350! Blad-de-du-blah, $350, badabow, bow, $400, who's at $400, badee baba, boda bow, $400!" He gets a taker.

He points at me "$450, it's to you at $450. $450? Four, Fifty? Bada-bow-bow, $450, bow, bow, bada-ba-ba."

I watch MY Jeep pulling out of the garage...I nod - ok, $450.

Back to the other guy. "$500? to you at $500, bada-bow, ba-ba $500? Cmon, guys -working 4x4, winter's coming up...who's at $500? Ok! $500!"

Back to me: $550?

No. I shake head back and forth, cutting motion across throat – I'm out. He got it for $500. He can have it.

There was also a 2000 Wrangler with 117K. A Reposession. It looked to be in good shape to me, pretty damn good. But I don't know anything about Wranglers, yet. I'm still learning Jeeps. Black spray paint job, even the badges, but the interior was in good shape, the frame was solid, the engine compartment looked good. All stock, no lift or tires. It went for $1300. That felt like a really cheap price to me.

If you haven't been to a public auto auction, you should go check it out. Even if you don't want to buy anything, it is really neat to see the prices a wide range of vehicle go for (or don't get bid on.)

I don't need a working Cherokee yet, just something to get started on. As I said before, I work for a truck/suv accessory company. So I want to slowly do repairs and upgrades on this thing, and do a series of articles and videos for our website. Like I did when I worked for JC Whitney, but better. Less corporate grip on my creativity. Anyways...

I want a stockish Cherokee to start with. I wanna cut my own fenders, do my own cut and fold. You guys get it.

I'll keep updating this thread with my auction adventure, until I find my XJ. Or maybe I'll start an "Auction Watch" thread and keep it updated. I'm trying to find the best way to participate in this forum even when I don't even have a Jeep yet.

Mike

Right now I'm rocking the little-known Chevrolet Aveo-J while I hunt for my XJ.

Holy Macaroni! Both Cherokees are on the "Tow List," meaning they are sitting in the back of the auction lot, on flats, and probably don't run.

Well, they definitely don't run. Both have the negative battery cable removed.

The 1989 with 177K has a right purty interior, fresh out of the 1989 catalog: Plaid bucket seats in great shape, a "Back 2 The Future" sticker on the dash and aviators hanging from the mirror. But the underside is wasted away. No Rockers. None. And the engine compartment is full of propeller seeds (the seeds shaped like a boomerang, that spin as they fall to the ground...from a Maple tree?) And there is like, moss growing on the window molding of the passenger side. Like it was parked next to a garage 10 years ago and sat there. Also, I didn't see a radiator cap. Not that it was missing, I just didn't see a filler neck or cap anywhere. I probably should have looked harder.

The 1996 looks like a mid-90s, well-used vehicle. The body is OK. The rear bumper is dented, and the outter skin of the rear door is cracked above the bumper dent. Is the door fiberglass? It looked cracked, not dented exactly. The "frame" is cool, the rockers are cool, the shackles and front leaf spring mounts look in-tact and not rotting away. But the floorboard on the passenger side is missing. Just carpet keeping me from Flintstoning it. But the rockers are cool, which is the important part for me. I wouldn't mind trying to weld in new floor panels. It might be fun.

The engine compartment looked fine, pretty clean actually. The battery is disconnected, and it is sitting on four flat tires, so it probably doesn't run yet.

I'll probably head back up to see what they go for. I'd be interested in the 1996, but I'll need a truck and trailer to get it out of there. And a winch or something to pull it up on the trailer. I can't push a Jeep on four flats.

I'll keep y'all posted.
