I have a 91 xj that I would like to sell...but...

I have no idea what it would be worth. It's a Laredo 4.0L inline V6, 5-speed. 165,000 miles. It came with me from California so there is almost no rust. Has always been used as a street vehicle. Cosmetically very good. Hood and roof painted recently and headliner replaced. No rips or tears in upholstery. New tires with fewer than 1000 miles.
Can anyone give me guidance as to what I should ask for it?

Tough question on what it is worth. It depends on many factors, among the more important are condition and finding the right buyer that is willing to pay a good price. Prices of Cherokees in good condition seem to be increasing. A very nice red 1997 with 87,500 miles sold at an auction site in November for $14,500. From what I checked on the Kelly Blue Book web site it doesn’t seem to go further back than 1992 model year. A 1992 Limited (top option version) in good condition and similar mileage is valued at around $1300 on KBB.com. I think you can get much more than that if it is in mechanically good condition, especially if from California originally. If it has been in the Midwest for several years there is likely more rust on it than is obvious at a quick look and that will lower the value. When I was shopping around for a lower mile, good or better condition Cherokees last year I was seeing prices roughly in the range from $4000 to $7000. For me good maintenance records, minimal mechanical issues, a clean Carfax report, near stock condition, no significant rust and better than average wear and tear could put it into the $3500 to $4500 range for this year and miles. Just my guess. Maybe more if it is in exceptional condition, and/or has any unique options or you find a buyer that loves it. If you are in no hurry do some research on recent selling prices, start at the higher end of what you think you might get and see what the interest is. .
