2000 XJ engine tick

So i bought a my cherokee with 235k miles for $2k a couple weeks ago and she’s a gem. recently i’ve had a loud ticking noise coming from my engine. i really think it is lifter tick but i am not 100% sure. it ticks loud at idle and when i drive but when i let off the peddle it stops. i tried some additive to see if that would help and it seemed to make it a little louder. i need a second opinion on what i should do.... should i have it rebuilt? the noise is unbearable and i would hate to see it blow in the next couple months.

Think it could be an exhaust leak? They're usually described as a "ticking". Also 4.0 exhaust manifolds are known to crack down at the collector.

NICE XJ by the way!

I am getting it looks at on monday and getting it ran through then i will know if it is a lifter or manifold leak. all i know is that it doesn’t sound good one bit. i cant even hear my music most of the time🙄 if it’s a exhaust leak what should i do?

Only problem I've read of here is the cracking at the collector although it could be the gasket at the head burned out. If it's cracked some have replaced the manifold and a few I've read had them welded. General consensus seems to be it being caused by weak motor and trans mounts causing stress at the collector. If it's that loud I'm going to take a long shot guess and say it's exhaust related. What ever you find out Monday I hope it's nothing major.
