So I just made this account a few minutes ago but I’m rather new to the forum but not Jeeping. the idea for my jeep stems from a youtuber out in Utah that runs a company using XJs as off-road rescue. I’m missing a few things for my interior and that’s where I plan on starting. I’ve done some research but I’d like some advice

I should mention I’m driving a 99 two door Cherokee sport

first things first to really get her where I want her I need to look into replacing the wiring for my driver side speakers. Yeah that’s right, speakerS both of them, front and rear. Neither of them put out audio normally, and the intermittently play the music that’s on. How difficult is it to run a new wire from the head to the door and will that also fix the rear speaker too? The stereo isn’t stock either so the wondering is if that will change anything.

Next I need to redo the headliner. You’d think that wouldn’t be too difficult but for this vehicle it is. I’ve got an aftermarket sunroof in and half a headliner board. Any thoughts? I’m thinking cardboard but I haven’t a clue if that will actually work.

Go to pick and pull and get a headliner out of a salvage, and you should be able to cut it for the sunroof opening. I think I picked one up for my daughters car a while back for about $15. I recovered it and then swapped it out in her car and just trashed the original. The Cherokee headliner is not a very strong material to work with to begin with. If you want to recover it, go on Amazon or down to Hobby Lobby and pick up some foam padded headliner material. It is cheap. What's more expensive is the adhesive, as you will need at least two cans, possibly three at about $14/can. Lots of good YouTube videos on there on how to repair a headliner. I've done it twice now, and it really is easy if you take your time.

The speaker wiring runs through your door. You can fix it, but it is a pain in the ass. What I did with mine was to run new speaker wire through the door plug and splice into the radio wiring harness that is just behind the plastic floor panel. It was a lot easier than trying to work in that tight space between the door jamb to re-splice the original wires. They get abused quite a bit, especially on the driver side door from opening and closing frequently. Some people just run new speaker wire all the way into the back of the stereo opening in the dash and splice in there.

I should add, for the rear speakers, they do not run through the doors, but if you are pulling your headliner to repair it, would be easy to track down the short for the rear speaker and just fix the original wiring. Use the continuity function on a multimeter and track the short in the wire and just repair it. Or you can run new wire all along the roof into the a-pillar and down behind the dash before you reinstall your headliner.

Pick and pull? Is that Colorado Springs area? Thank you for the advice! I’ll see if I can find a headliner board. You think 3 cans of adhesive should do? I can probably manage that. I ought to look into the speakers first see if I can’t figure that out while the headliner is down. The only reason I think the speakers are related is the stopped working at the same time, and the aren’t blown. Just no audio. Could it be something wrong with where the wires go into the harness? They stopped before I replaced the stereo so I appear to have done at least that right

I think the one in Colorado Springs is actually called "UPull and Pay" it's down on the south end of Springs off of Hwy 85. There are several locations in Colorado, but if you are in the Denver area, the best one is off of I-25 They currently have at least 3 xj's in the Colo Spgs yard that will work for your model year to snag a headliner. Heck, you might even find one that has decent cover on it if you are careful getting it off. Get a friend to help to avoid bending it too much.

The speaker wiring harness that goes from the driver kick panel, through the door jamb and into the driver side door is notorious for the wires dry-rotting and breaking . That is almost always the culprit for why the driver side door speaker doesn't work. That harness also has all of the power window and door lock wiring, so is almost always the culprit for those things not working also. It's just really hard to work on them in there, but it can be done. The rear speakers do not go through that same path. If I remember correctly, they go down along the edge of the floorboard as part of another harness, then run up the rear pillar into the harness that feeds into the wiper/washer, license plate light for the rear hatch. I wish I had paid better attention to that routing when I did my headliner, but you will be able to tell really easily once you remove the headliner and can trace the path of the rear speaker wires back. It is less common for those to fail as they aren't under the same stress. I would use the continuity setting on a multimeter and start working back to see if you can find where the break may be. Also, the harness behind the radio housing could have been hacked at one point by a PO installing aftermarket radio or amp, so you will want to also check there and see if the wires had been cut into.

I love that dudes videos... Matt from Winders? The one from a few days ago with the gray jeep that fell in the sink hole was awesome....

I will need to get to my headliner done as well. Not because its drooping, but because having a custom headliner of the material I choose would be cool. I'm a camo nut (have hunted pretty much all my life and I was in the military until medically retired in 2017) and also having a dark green XJ, it would be sweet to keep the green/camo thing going with maybe some forest green, olive green, or even a camo pattern headliner or something. The rear speaker bar material is coming off a little, so this just gives me a good reason to do it all.

I wonder if I added a little bit thicker foam material, maybe 1/4" thick instead of the really thin stuff usually under there, if it would help keep heat out in the summer...... And keep A/C and heat inside a little better.....
While I'm at it, I may take the headliner board and get some twinkley LED lights to put in it so it looks like cool lights in the ceiling of the jeep..... OK never mind that's a little................ flamboyant...... if you know what I mean. But my daughters would love it!!!! hahahaha

While Pick N Pull is a name of a chain of salvage yard nation wide it's also a generic term many folks use for a salvage yard that lets you physically go into the yard and pull the parts you want directly from the vehicle.

Its like calling a cardboard stick with cotton on each end a "q-tip", when "Q-tip" is the brand name of said item. Or calling and adhesive strip with a piece of gauze used to cover a wound a "band-aid", when "Band-Aid" is the brand name. Or calling a thin piece of paper used to blow your nose a "kleenex", when "Kleenex" is the brand name..... Even if none of these items are the actual brand and may be a store brand. Its just calling it by what everyone knows it by....

Or if you are old and way back when said I have to Xerox something just meant you were making copies of something on a copy machine.
Despite what the brand of the copy machine was. LOL.
