it was a great day because none of us broke anything major! we did lose a window, broke a marker light on the front, smashed one of our after market lights on the rear bumper, cracked our front bumper, broke the front headlight assembly (not the light though, but now the passenger headlight points at the ground) there is still mud on the inside of the windsheild....but at least we didn't overheat!!! and we didn't blow our motor up like the Toyota that we saw on the trail that developed a severe rod knock while we stood by and watched! All in all it was a good day!

Well, My XJ finally developed the dreaded loose steering column disease that plagues the XJ world. I attempted to handle this the quick lazy way first. I took the steering wheel off and turn signal switch out and was able to get the bolt on the right hand side with a 1/4 inch socket and a long 1/4 inch drive extention. So, I tightened it down as best I figured I could without breaking it. Then put it all back together.
After about a week of driving to work and then a 4wheeling trip up to Walker this last weekend, it was even more loose than it was before.
So, I took the wheel off and turn signal switch out again. This time I was still going to tighten just the one bolt and use thread lock compound as it is all you can get to without further dismantling of the steering column. Well, as I was gentley pulling the bolt out it slipped out of the socket and fell down deep inside the steering column....Well, after I finished yelling every cuss word known to man, I removed the 3 torque tip bolts that hold the upper portion of the steering column in, removed the ignition key cylinder, and the upper keeper on the steering column bearing. This gave me some wiggle room and I was able to actually remove the upper column section. Now, I was not only able to fish out the bolt I'd lost but I had access to the other bolt as well. I slathered the one bolt with thread lock and then cranked it down as tight as I dared. I removed the other bolt and did the same thing. Those things will never come loose again. I'd be surprised if I ever needed to get them out if I could. I don't even care. That steering column being loose like it was made driving pretty scarey. So, I put it all back together and it works very well. The 4wheeling trip I am going on to Evan's Creek this weekend will be the true test of my labor. I'm sure it's fixed for good this time.

TJ flares on my XJ. Well I did it. It took a long long time to put the first cut in to it. But after a number of times that I turned on the grinder and almost touched the fender then back off and turn it off, look at it some more. IDK, I’m waiting for the corner marker lights I ordered where I’m going to install strobes in them if there’s room. A part of me was screaming the whole time, ” WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOUR JEEP? But I think it growing on me. Now for the rear flares.

The rear driveshaft that I broke in half while wheeling Evans Creek is now on my garage wall for all to see. I replaced the bad U-joint in my original rear driveshaft and put it back on my Jeep. Now, I have the one I got from Brandon as a ready up spare. I will take it with me every 4wheeling trip because "WHEN" I go to tackle that rock garden at Evans Creek again, I will be ready and if I break, I will merely take the 5 minutes it will take to swap it out and then we can continue wheeling rather than limp my Jeep back to town for repairs. Also learned that I need to carry extra Tranny fluid and a little hand pump for TC fluid replacement. This will prevent me from attempting to cut my thumb off, again, while trying to carve a soda bottle into a funnel. I have had my butt kicked 2 X now at Evans Creek. I guess the 3rd time will be a Charm.

Brandon, I was looking at your Jeep the other day and wondering if you were going to have clearance issues with the 35s. Especially after I saw the 35s on your dad's Jeep. Those things are huge. I hope you can make them work without having to spend too much extra cash. I have a set of brand new Super Lift 4" coils taking up space in my garage. They have never even been on a Jeep. If you can use then, they are yours, Bud. Just say the word. Thanks again for all the help Saturday.

Rich, I have been wanting to do my XJs rocker panels in Diamond Plate just like yours are. Did you do it yourself or did you buy the pieces somewhere? If so, where? I'd like to do mine the same way. I have been having a problem with mean rocks and stumps jumping over my rock sliders and biting my doors...LOL.

ya brian after seeing you break your drive shaft i am definitely going to get a spare for myself. i had the same concerns about clearence. i have been researching and found some different ways to bumpstop the front and rear ends. i am going to have to trim a little bit more of the back fenders. i am going to do the tuck and fold to the rear. the front fenders should be clear enough with the new bump stop design i am going to make. i am going to have to trim the front bumper back a little bit but thats about it. i might end up getting some new5.5" leafs for the rear that dont sag and maybe some 6.5 or 7.5" coils in the front with the 2" spacer. seeing how much the 4.5" leafs and coils sagged makes me wanna jump up to a higher lift so when that sags it will be at the right heighth. i will have to start posting pictures of my progress

Hey Brian, ya I made them. I bought two 2x4 sheets of diamond plate aluminum on Ebay. Then pulled out the old grinder and got going on it. After all the cutting and bending was done I used a tool box liner for a gasket. It's that stuff you can buy at Fred Meyers and it comes in like 18x18 for a buck a piece. When it's new it sticks to that metal like you glued it. Then i just trimed it with a razor blade.

That really looks sharp and I bet it can handle a rock or stump strike much better than the paper thin stuff I have on my Jeep now.

Thanks Ya they have done well so far. Now if I could just find a polish that will bring them back to life. The pictures above are from when they were new. My first post on this page is what they look like now.
