Default 1991 jeep cherokee sport 4.0L

Hello,

I have a 91 jeep Cherokee sport 4.0L AT. For some reason i am hearing a metal clunking sound(sounds like the exhaust is clanking around)at low rpm only. I have been trying to make this a reliable jeep and have already replaced the fuel pump, brakes, tires, water pump, thermostat, serp. belt, wires, plugs, distributor cap, etc. Still have no idea !!!

If it sounds like the exhaust is rattling at idle. That is most likely what it is. Give the whole exhaust system a good shake front to rear. Check all clamps to ensure they are in good shape and tight. Pay special attention to the CAT and muffler. They are the two biggest culprates for starting to rattle with age.

The muffler on my 91 developed a rattle shortly after I bought it. I went ahead and replaced it with a Flow Master Super 40 and it works and sounds great. I even blew a rear DS in two while wheeling. The FM muffler took a couple good licks and it's still fine. Those things are definitely worth the money they cost.

checked exhaust front to back and everything is good there! also have a problem with it wanting to die on tight right hand turns with low fuel. could it be low idle problems?

If this is happening while you are just starting out then quits once you get moving it may be a transmission mount.

i also have a 91 white sport. mine had the same noise. it would rattle at an idle and hit harder on take off or downshift. it turned out to be the transmission mount. Visualy mine looked fine untill i looked at the new mount. my old mount was flatened. my tranny sits about 2 inches higher now.
