ZJ V8 tie rod conversion...
What year model ZJ do I need to get the parts from for my 91 XJ to do the tie rod conversion? I bent my tie rod last weekend so I need to replace it and figure I'll go ahead and do the ZJ upgrade..

93-98 ZJ V8 tierod, all the same part #'s.
Theres 3 pieces you'll need. Tierod with non removable tierod end, adjusting collar and the other tierod end. Mine ran just over $100 IIRC. |
No need to replace the draglink correct? I am thinking I am going to do this over the weekend..
|
Not sure honestly, it may be stronger from a ZJ. Thats something i'v been meaning to check into.
Most guys just get the tierod as thats usually what gets bent first. In my case i found my tierod bent (again) and ran to the local parts store. |
Cool I'll have to get all the part numbers together and head to store this weekend and get the tie rod parts..I can keep my current draglink..
|
I think Blue just did this conversion recently. Maybe. Probably. I dunno.
|
Is there a picture of this convertion done. What all does it do and what do you replace?
|
|
it replaces the tie rod.. on the XJ i's the long straight and flat rod between the drivers tire and the rod that runs to the pitman arm.

This kit from crown is basically everything you'll find in a ZJ V8's steering setup: http://shoplive.rompalicious.com/ind...oducts_id=1946 That will most likely be what I go with when I upgrade my steering. |

The tie-rod and tie-rod ends are the biggest gain from the ZJ V8 setup. The draglink is 2mm larger, thus not a BIG upgrade, but an upgrade nonetheless.

wow that's a steel of a deal..I can't buy just the tirerod assembly for that price locally..I think I found my next purchase...I replaced my draglink and tierod with stock but eh what I thought was moog was nothing more then chinese junk but I got the draglink, tierod and TRE's and ball joints for $160 shipped so can't complain..Haven't used hte ball joints and I won't have to..My buddies brother works for Dana/Spricer here locally and he can get us a set of spicer ball joints free..:)

I'm not 100% on this but i'd suggest some more reading before buying the Crown setup, espescially if running stock backspaced wheels. A friend did the steering and the tierod ends are too close to the rim for comfort so he had to buy wheels.
Also read of a dead spot like the Rusty's kit i used to run. |
I just bought the whote set of ZJ components in a kit from GerrOffraod (one of our vendors) for $189 shipped and they are solid not hollow tubes like the XJ stuff. The whole kit was a bolt on and it took 5 minutes so easy a 3 year old could do it. I was going to do a write up but when I saw how simple it was I decided not to bother. I got the alignment checked today and I was a 1/16th off in my guesstemation.
|
I had forgotten Gerr offered this kit... good deal.
