Yard find 118k mile 1994, brown trans fluid question

just picked up a neglected, sitting 1994 cherokee mostly due to the lower miles and the full time 4wd trans setting {useful on winter paved roads}

the transmission was shifting a bit rough, pulled the stick, was full but kind of a honey color, not black or even dark brown. i then spent 45 min or so searching on here, found out that dex/merc 3 is the fluid of choice, drained about 3.5qt, poured in 3.5qt new and drove around a mile or two. MUCH better shifting, smoother. of course i drained about 1/3rd of what's in there so my question to you guys is would it be worth pulling the pan in 500 miles or so to replace the filter and clean it all out, or should i do another 1-2 partial drain adds to flush out as much old fluid as possible before i drop the pan? other than neglect it's a solid truck, doesn't burn oil, idles well etc.

Chanfe the fluid a coupla more times. The filters are really just a screen anyway.
