XJ Steering Column Moves Back-and-Forth

XJ Steering Column Moves Back-and-Forth
Mine is a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. The steering column is loose. I can move it at least an inch back and forth, along the length of the steering column itself. There is no side to side play. Any ideas what might the cause of this? Thanks.

Have a helper do exactly what you do, whilst you have a look underneath the dash and in the engine bay along the steering to see if you can detect anything loose or with unusual play in it? At least it might give you a rough idea.
