XJ - Runs hot, won't start?

Jeeps likes to run really hot, at 250temp and sometimes can hear the eletric fan kick on, sometimes not. Shut it off, it wont start, takes about 6 struggling cranks and then idles really rough and like miss fires, dose not throw CEL afterwords.

Replaced t-stat few months back, few coolant flush's, why do XJ's run so damn hot? Or is it just me?

VhoffXJ 03-15-2012 05:21 PM

Correction, miss type. I ment 150 for the temp, halfway.

http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums...d.php?t=391831 I saw in the other thread you have an '01, this is a must read. Get your hands on a point-n-shoot temp gun, point it at the tstat housing verify temp. High temps put extra strain on the starter, also on the battery, so have battery load tested, also freshen the grounds in the engine compartment. 150 is way to cool, not hot.

Battery is fairly new, also load size smaller, got it for free so. Good points thanks!

R we talkin' 150F or 150C?:001_huh:

XJ.89.Limited 03-15-2012 05:48 PM

150F is wayyy too low. It should run at 210F. 150C is crazy hot and I doubt it would even run at that temperature.

VhoffXJ 03-15-2012 05:56 PM

Sits at 230ish. Sorry I'm so thrown off. Thats my final answer!

fishtaconc 03-15-2012 06:04 PM

230 is kinda hot for a 00-01, with the 0331. Most definitely keep an eye on the coolant level. Read the link in my first post.

i had similar problem. Turned out it was the expansion tank was sealed and did not allow coolant/pressure to travel into expansion tank. I drilled a hole through the nipple and blew the hose clear with air, runs 190F now.

What year and engine size???
Like said above if it's a late 99-2001 you could have a cracked head (0331 head)
