What radiator did you use the core thickness is very important , the thicker the core the better . I used champion all aluminum two row core that is about 2 inches thick I live where it gets hot a couple of weeks ago it was over 100 for about two weeks and this radiator worked great my engine ran at under 210 all that time .
if you are going to change the stock radiator. dont buy the 3 row radiator, its not any good. the 2 row is perfect for the 242 amc. temperature over 100 fahrenheit I would say 210 and 215 is not bad for the xj.
if you have added 2 extra fans on the outside of the radiator. I would have removed them and, upgraded the stock electric fan with something better. and a heavy duty fan clutch.

Thanks for the help guys.I bought 3 row radiator my mistake they say it is better than two row one and I will check the upper hose. The only thing left is the water pump and the fan(clutch i had already replaced).
The cap of the radiator came with the new one,I dont think it is cap now it is either the fan or the water pump now

with the 3 row radiator on the stock water pump, you can get bad circulation in your cooling system. with the 2 row radiator this dosent happened.the 3 row radiator I recommend high flow water pump, with upgraded blade.

How many miles on it? I would change the water pump if it is a factory original one just out of precaution and put in a new thermostat (just use a factory style one, a lower temp will not help with overheating).
If the temperature comes down after you are moving, it is either an air flow issue (fans not flowing enough) or coolant flow issue (too slow or too fast if flow). I have never had an issue after I refreshed my cooling system with all stock components, even slow speed crawling in 100*F weather.
Even after all this the car is still the same.Tomorrow I am taking to a workshop to check Efan and cooling temp sensor.
As I had installed two extra fans to cool it down but to no avail this is still the same.
Yes I do the same as in neutral to bring the temp down.
The temperature here is around 45 degree Celsius but my other jeep is fine.Any ideas what else could go wrong
This is closer to 240 than you'd think. You're probably very close to having a "my jeep suddenly overheated" situation, which isn't sudden at all. It's just that the temp gauge is not being honest with you.
many people upgrade the radiator to 3 row, but dosent upgrade the stock water pump after radiator is installed. this means you get bad flow and the temperature will climb I little more then normal. and on the highway the temperature goes back to normal because of the air flow. if you do it the other way, and install the high flow water pump on stock radiator you can get to fast circulation, and the water dosent stay around the cylinder wall long enough to take heat from the cylinder wall. and you will still overheat.
aim not any expert, but not a newbie either. I have rebuild my stock cooling system my self, so I can tow heavy loads up hills, and pull out logs. and my experience is the 2 row radiator is so good you dont need bigger radiator on the xj. even in 100 f weather.
this is my setup, and it has been on my xj for over 2 years now with no issue.
- 2 speed bmw thermo switch. 80/88 degree celcius. mounted on the lower hose. the fans kick on when the gauge shows 210 degree fahrenheit.
- Volvo 850 2 speed fan relay.
- 2 off Volkswagen sharan/galaxy fans. 300 watt, 25 amps, 2500 cfm, total is 5000 cfm. over time is goes down to around 4800 because of heat. made by bosh (quality fans)
- 2 row radiator.
- 195 (stock) thermostat.
- stock water pump.
- high flow thermostat housing.
- custom fan shroud.
the cooling system on my aw4 is another story. its not stock ^^.

Yes the car gets overheated cause the reservoir tank spils all the coolant out of it plus all the hose pipe and radiator cap starts to make noise.I do have one more xj and a grand cherokee besides this. The other two are fine.
The temp snap which I just shared with you-guys is just when it starts it crosses and reaches three forth very easily.
They are after market addons.i didnt removed any mechanical fan all are intact plus i changed the fan clutch as well
hey man im having the same issue i was wondering if you ever got it figured out
my water pump is fine, I have two fans one of them is not working so I think that might be the problem, but I kept it running one day not thinking about it and I let it run for about 20 minutes then I turned it off and it started steaming and everything got boiled out of the reservoir and I had to let it cool down, it was fine after that it only overheats when I’m just sitting there but when I’m moving it’s fine but I’m pretty sure my fan isn’t kicking on at the certain temperature so idk that’s why I need help
Did you check your fan clutch?
There can be many cause for overheating, radiator can also be the issue.
Check your fan clutch first?
If the fan rotates for a bit after the car is off, that means it's worn out.
My clutch doesn’t work at all and my radiator is fine so I’ll probably just have to replace that, and most fans come with the clutch pre-installed right?
